Who is Living in Our Forests

Following up on a set of emails reported yesterday from somewhere along the Ohio River, believed to be Cincinatti, Lon Strickler reveals more email contact with two ladies who may be having a Mothman experience. The first of the two friends to report says they live closer to Middletown, OH, and gives details of what happened after her first encounter with the creature. Strickler also presents other reports of a Mothman-type creature from Ohio and promises more information on the current reports as the witnesses continue contact. Strickler focuses attention on another cryptid today, too, in a comprehensive report of a cryptid flap that struck a South American nation at the turn of the century, detailed in The Chile Chupacabras Attacks - Spring 2000, with many different illustrations of the elusive monster. Elsewhere, Neil Arnold relates a twist on the British hellhound legend with A Load of Old Bull?

With several photos and other images, Loren Coleman assembles comments from his followers who viewed last night's show on The History Channel and Discovery Canada that assembled several experts to discuss the various theories concerning the evidence of a huge hairy hominoid secretly living in the wilderness areas of North America. Coleman also reviews his own contribution to the show, pointing out some omissions from what the experts were able to present. Coleman also promises to update reader comments on the show throughout the day. Also, Lon Strickler at Phantoms & Monsters is revealing email correspondence that appears to point to a recent cryptid encounter described in Mothman Sighting Near Cincinnati, Ohio. Elsewhere, Micah Hanks draws on recently revealed research concerning the Hardwicke's wooly bat's relationship with the insect devouring pitcher plant and the albino redwood tree's relationship to its parent in Vampires and Plants that Bite: A Strange, Carnivorous Symbiosis. Meanwhile, Dr. Karl Shuker reviews the subjects he has covered recently at his cryptozoology weblog, pointing out which subjects drew the most reponse from readers, in Feeling Blue About ShukerNature!

Bigfoot Sighting - The Freeman Footage

Loren Coleman, co-author with Mark A. Hall of True Giants: Is Gigantopithecus Still Alive?, details his assistance to a program that debuts tonight on The History Channel and Discovery Canada, "Bigfoot: The Definitive Guide," with world class experts such as Dr. Jeff Meldrum assisting in assembling information for a "global survey of the so-called 'Bigfoot phenomenon'." And Coleman has recommendations for how to pass the time during the blizzard conditions across much of the U.S., including watching the Bigfoot program and reading his books, in Monster Storm Closes CZ Museum For Two Days. Elsewhere, Nick Redfern makes certain everyone knows there are more hairy hominoids to be reported than just Bigfoot and the Yeti as he reveals a story from Russia in Lair of the Beasts: A World War Two Monster. Meanwhile, a 1975 shooting of a 160-pound cat in Paraguay that exhibited some strange dentition has Glen Vaudrey speculating on whether the animal was a "mutant jaguar" or a remnant Smilodon, as you'll see in I'd Go the Whole Wide World #4, and more animals no longer with us are included in one we missed two weeks ago, Five Extinct Animals That Would Be Way Cooler to Clone Than a Woolly Mammoth. Also, a fairly fledgling blog effort from the Land Down Under comes in for some well-deserved praise in Website Rates CFZ Australia a Top Read.

Dr. Karl Shuker reveals the interest of the discoverer of the giant Colombian toad, Bufo blombergi, in native tales of a man-beast feared by native tribes of Ecuador and dubbed the "sacharuna." The creature is reported to "kidnap humans, thereby calling to mind various comparable claims for North America's sasquatch or bigfoot." Shuker includes tales of sacharuna research by the Swedish explorer, photographer, writer and giant toad discoverer Rolf Blomberg, who died in 1996, and some of Blomberg's associates. Elsewhere, another "man-beast" occupies the report from a Golden State newspaper story from the 19th century unearthed by Richard Muirhead in A California Wildman from the 1880s, and the latest instalment of a popular video feature of the Centre for Fortean Zoology is announced in On the Track (of Unknown Animals).

True Giants: 1937 Cryptomundo
Loren Coleman presents information from a 1937 Autralian newspaper the may have bearing on the subject of the new book he and Mark A. Hall released in December, True Giants: Is Gigantopithecus Still Alive? Coleman remarks, "The basis of this article seems to be one T. C. Bridges. Bridges was a writer who penned what we would call cryptofiction today, as well as some factual accounts of high adventure." Did T. C. Bridges have access to accounts of giant hominoids like those reported in their new book by Coleman and Hall? Meanwhile, giants are mentioned in a report about a recent Italian symposium that covered more strangeness than just the cryptozoological, as seen in Andrew Collins' Seeking Sardinian Mysteries.

Valley of the Skookum 2011 by Lenny Green

The Ballad of Ape Canyon by Lenny Green
The Werewolf Faith in Nineteenth-century France Beachcombing's Bizarre History Blog
Dr. Beachcombing admits he has a weakness for the werewolf subject, having devoted several recent posts to the shape-shifting man-beast of lore. As a way of easing into different topics in the near future, Beachcombing breaks off the current werewolf series by "paying tribute to the man who many years ago first introduced the werewolf to polite English society: that priestly Victorian loon, exaggerator and bizarrist, Sabine Baring-Gould." Thus Beachcombing comes to Baring-Gould's account, supposedly true, of his meeting with the people of a tiny French village around the year 1850 and the warning the villagers gave about the presence of the "loup-garoux." Did the werewolf legend hold sway in an 1850s era Gaulish hamlet, or was Baring-Gould exaggerating? Elsewhere, Loren Coleman and his Portland, ME, establishment that features displays of just about all-things-cryptozoological gets a fine and well-deserved write up from a visitor who admitted having worked for half a decade for arch-debunker and inveterate skeptic James Randi, as seen in inquisitive skeptic Jeff Wagg's IndieSkeptics presentation of A Visit to the International Cryptozoology Museum, with photos and an enhanced video version of the Patterson-Gimlin Bigfoot film. And at Cryptomundo Coleman offers a link to Christopher Noel's work on a recent section of video footage that offers a possible Sasquatch image, as presented in Enhanced Bigfoot Security Cam Video.

Legends of Bigfoot come to Ketchum

Idaho State University biology professor Jeff Meldrum, author of Sasquatch: Legend Meets Science, spoke last night to students at Indiana University Southeast (IUS) in New Albany, IN. Reporter Jerod Clapp covers Meldrum's presentation and commentary by associate professor of biology at IUS, Doug Darnowski, who invited Meldrum to address students concerning the reports of manlike creatures from around the world. With photos. And Meldrum has another such appearance scheduled for February 10, 2011, at The Sun Valley Center in Ketchum, ID, as part of the Center's multidisciplinary project Creatures: From Bigfoot to the Yeti Crab, as noted in Legends of Bigfoot Come to Ketchum. Reports of Meldrum's activities appear not to have run afoul of Loren Coleman's admonition Bigfoot, Not Bigfeet! Nor bigfoots! Nor sasquatches! Meanwhile, the reports of the appearance of the Russian Bigfoot, known as the Almasty, figure into Dale Drinnon's explanation of the reconstructions of fossil skulls, as Drinnon exposes, with images, in Neanderthal Snubnoses Again.

Julie Burchill unloads on the concept of the creature known thorughout the Latino world as the chupacabras and to the Anglicized world as the chupacabra. She also unloads some other opinions and drops an f-bomb along the way, so readers are hereby warned. Burchill goes to a Benjamin Radford explanation of how the idea of the chupacabras came about in Puerto Rico after one was allegedly seen and described by one Madelyn Tolentino in 1995. Radford's claims that Tolentino based the creature's description on the character of Sil in the motion picture Species in a column in Fortean Times. Does it help that the legend of the goatsucker (i.e. the chupacabras) existed among the Hispanic populations before 1995? And on the heels of the chupacabras trashing by Burchill and Radford come reports of spurious Bigfoot claims in Deputies Respond to Phony Bigfoot Call and Bigfoot ‘Sighting' Lures TV Network. Elsewhere, Glen Vaudrey is seeking cryptid reports from every nation on Earth with his latest cryptid being a favorite of the people of Uruguay, as seen in I'll Got the Whol World Wide #3. Review-HBMs Crypto-Corner 1-26-11
The Allendale Wolf Beachcombing's Bizarre History Blog
Using a great deal of quoted material from the late Charles Fort, Dr. Beachcombing attempts to show the last wolf in England (not Ireland or Scotland!) breathed its last in 1905, not, as generally supposed, in the reign of Henry VII. But there's more to the tale, as pointed out by Fort in his book Lo! and by Dr. Beachcombing in this bit of Fortean and cryptozoological history. Dr. Beachcombing gleans more from the tales of lupine lore in a post that depends on the writings of a "Greek antiquarian," as seen in The Werewolf of Temesa. Meanwhile, Dr. Karl Shuker steps outside the bounds of natural history for his "examination of one of the world's most mysterious, enigmatic localities," as seen, with images, in Stone Giants, Man-Birds, and Long-Eared Ghosts.

Bigfoot: The Definitive Guide

A team of top scientists come together with one goal to create the definitive guide to Bigfoot. Does the creature exist? And if it does where is it? And how can it survive without being detected? Using a new interactive map the team has plotted more than 10,000 Bigfoot type sightings from around the world. These sightings are of an unidentified creature which walks on two legs and is covered in a thick layer of hair. Many of theses sightings date back over 100 years. With their expert knowledge of the natural world they are able to dismiss nearly 90% of the sightings, but what emerges is a series of global hotspots that cannot be explained which indicate that something is out there. The team examines these global hotspots and searches for explanations including new theories that suggest we may have been looking for the wrong creature all along?

A former Blackwater employee now living in Hawaii reports on a menehune encounter in which the creatures attempted to snatch a couple's baby from their home, whereupon the husband fired his 45 at them. The menehune were said to look "like little midgets" of Hawaiian ethnicity. And in California, a Georgetown man shoots creature thinking it was Chupacabras; but it was only a mangy bear cub.

On Janaury 12, a stationary wildlife camera captured a photo of a mountain lion in Chesterfield, Missouri. It's the first confirmed sighting in St. Louis County since 1994, and the 13th in the state since the animal was declared extinct in Missouri. Mountain lions were largely driven from the state by deforestation and hunting by the 1920s. The state hasn’t had a breeding population in decades. The closest groups of cougars live in Nebraska and South Dakota. Elsewhere, Lindsay Selby reports on a crypid in Gambia, Africa, that is said to resemble a man-sized owl in The Kikiyaon, real or imaginary? The description provided by witnesses suggest it may also refer to the Sasabonsam, a sort of vampire that's similarly described in local myths.

Bigfoot - An in depth analysis of the Patterson film

Darren Naish's post concerns the Egyptian painting of a "pygmy mammoth" found on the tomb wall of Rekhmire, "Governor of the Town" of Thebes, and vizier of Egypt during the reigns of Tuthmose III and Amenhotep II (c. 1479 to 1401 BCE). If Rekhmire's elephant is neither a Siberian mammoth nor a wrongly-scaled 'symbolic' elephant, as some have suggested, could it be a depiction of one of the pygmy Mediterranean island-dwelling species? Most of the dwarf Mediterranean elephants were Pleistocene animals that were long gone by the time of the Pharoahs, but it has been noted that a population of dwarfed elephants seem to have lingered on in isolation on the Greek island of Tilos. And on the other side of the size spectrum, the Legendary giant crayfish species is discovered in Tennessee, found hiding under a rock. no less. The post writer notes: "Cryptozoologists might want to savor this moment - this is probably the closest real scientific equivalent to finding mythical creatures like Bigfoot or the Loch Ness Monster that they're ever going to get."

A New Look for 2011

Yet MORE Videos: THE BLUFF CREEK FILM SITE PROJECT, Nearing Conclusion of Year One. THOMSQUATCH, MYSTERY SKULL, BOOKS, MORE...!

Dr. Karl Shuker, whose latest book, Karl Shuker's Alien Zoo: From the Pages of Fortean Times, was released late last year, attempts to get to the bottom of the longstanding puzzle of the sirrush, the enigmatic creature continuously presented in the same form on all Babylonian seals and stamps - was it a remnant dinosaur? - and looks at the "great dragon or serpent" slain by Daniel in the Biblical Apocrypha and Behemoth described in the Book of Job. Elsewhere, Nick Redfern takes on the history of a creature to which magical powers were ascribed in Lair of the Beasts: Hell Hounds on the Loose. Meanwhile, Richard Muirhead tries to unravel the mystery of how the ancient Chinese seem to have known of an iconic African animal in Muirhead's Mysteries: Chinese Knowledge of the Giraffe Part Two. Also, there are illustrations accompanying Dale Drinnon's Traditional Northwest-Coast Sea Monsters which examines Native American traditions of strange sea beasts from the Pacific Northwest.

Review: Bigfoot Truth N Lies 1-18-11

This was a terrific show, with guest Billy Willard of Sasquatch Watch of Virginia, who discussed his founding of that group with his son in 2005, as well as his experiences in the field, particularly with field partner Tom L., such as when the two were in the Pine Barrens in New Jersey near a cranberry bog when they heard in the dark something heavy splash into the water and splash around, but they did not see anything because of fog that night. He also discussed that the terrain in Virginia is vastly different from the Pacific Northwest (a question I asked him), as well as I also asked him what he thought of John Green's statement that there were more sightings on the East Coast than the PNW, and Billy thought that it could be true. He also talked about that he will be speaking, along with Eric Altman, at Cabella's Sporting Goods Store in I believe Virginia at the end of the month, which is a great thing. I also announced about the upcoming Conferences. Next week will be the final Bigfoot Truth N Lies on BTR, beginning at 7:00 EST/6:00 Central. And as always, we do encourage you to please tune in and support great research.

Major announcement coming soon regarding HBM's Crypto-Corner....

Saying, "You can enjoy the book as an entertaining history lesson, as a serious first peek behind the reality of an elusive creature perhaps still lurking in the vast wildernesses of our strange planet, or as a collection of folk tales and myths from the frozen tundra of Siberia to the Islands of the South Seas", JT Lindroos presents an enticing review of the new effort from cryptozoologists Loren Coleman and Mark A. Hall, released in December by Anomalist Books. Does something more than Bigfoot/Sasquatch, Yeti, Yowie, Yeren, Almasty, Orang-Pendek and Mande Burung prowl the world's deep forests and hard-to-reach places? Elsewhere, Loren Coleman has an update on three hikers who entered one of those "hard-to-reach places" last summer, an area where they could have been searching for Bigfoot, but, instead, were looking for the fabled Lost Dutchman's Mine, as seen in Superstitions Take Three. Meanwhile, Neil Arnold reports on another encounter with an out-of-place feline in the British Isles with Bizarre 'Big Cat' Story of the Month, and Dr. Karl Shuker reveals his alter-ego as an accomplished poet with a bit of verse he penned thirty years ago, seen in A Nessie-ssary Rhyme!
