Book Review: Alien Animals by Janet and Colin Bord

Very good, if unusual perspective on Cryptozoological creatures

This book, written in 1980 and re-published in 1981 in paperback (which is the edition I am reviewing here) has 5 chapters about Cryptozoological creatures; Chapter 1 is devoted to Lake Monsters, including The Loch Ness Monster, Champ, Ogopogo and other lesser-known denizens of the deep; Chapter 2 is about giant cats (panthers, lions in unusual places) with some sightings in the Bords' home country of England; Chapter 3 examines large black dogs and how they are sometimes a portent of horrible storms or death and sometimes are not even solid matter (!); Chapter 4 tells us about giant winged creatures, including Thunderbirds, the Mothman, giant eagles and other winged terrors and Chapter 5 brings us perhaps the most well-known cryptids around the world-BHM's The Bords' designation for Big Hairy Monsters (Bigfoot/Sasquatch, Yeti, Man Monkey of England and the Almas of Russia). Some of the more famous cases of each of these cryptids are examined in each chapter, other accounts not so well-known. Chapter 6 attempts to explain the proliferation of these mystery cryptids and what may be the explanation for them appearing, especially in areas where they would not seem to be able to survive due to limited food sources or shelter or water. The Bords propose there may be a stranger explanation for these animals-that they are actually spiritual animals more so than flesh and blood. They also examine the UFO aspect and how it may explain some sightings and reports. The Bords are only proposing those as possible theories-they are not necessarily endorsing these as explanations for mystery creatures. All in all, I enjoyed this book a great deal, and it belongs in all Cryptozoology libraries (it is sitting beside my copies of the Bords' other books The Bigfoot Casebook and The Evidence For Bigfoot and Other Man-Beasts). This book is a solid 9 out of 10. Very good effort by the Bords.

So, the argument began with one simple suggestion I made, “Bigfooters, keep your guard up.” The statement was not meant to cause paranoia, start an internet sparring match, or throw other theories off the cliff.

Thom Powell: Hillsdale’s Sasquatch Expert

Posted by: Craig Woolheater on June 5th, 2013

Thom Powell has taught at Robert Gray Middle School for nearly three decades. He is a tall, gray man with a raspy voice and a disarmingly piercing gaze. Though his appearance is domineering and almost off-putting, his students know better. They flock to his classroom as soon as the bell rings, vying for his attention to their preteen attempts at sarcasm and deadpan. Powell meets them bit for bit, speaking with complete candor to his 14-year-old pupils. Truly, he is a gentle giant, and so, he says, is the Sasquatch.

With Loren Coleman's understanding of the twilight language, he makes etymology a compelling topic. When is a cryptid no longer a cryptid? How long ago did Heuvelmans coin the name 'cryptozoology'? What kind of creatures are included in hominology? Let's just say the definitions are just as enlightening as we are relieved the field's not called aprosbletozoology. This isn't the only place where School Lessons Become A Little Hairy where some students went agog over an agogwe leading Rhys Darby to consider the possibilities behind the sighting, and how it could be bigger than the discovery of H. floresiensis. More humble, but no less amazing, is Dan Vergano's piece on a Frog Thought To Be Extinct Found In An Israeli Pond, a testament to life's resiliency and the hidden critters right under our noses. Wrapping up our foray into the bush, Jason Head has news of the 'Lizard King' Fossil Showing Giant Reptiles Coexisted With Mammals During The Globally Warm Past.

A Surprise of Servicals

Posted by: Karl Shuker on June 4th, 2013
Many different hybrids between the smaller species of wild cat have been recorded over the years, but I would like to mention one particular interspecific (indeed, intergeneric) cross featuring smaller cats here – because, as far as I am aware, when I originally included details of it in the article of mine (Wild About Animals, [...]

Dr. Matthew Johnson: A Question About the “Nephilim/Bigfoot Theory”

Posted by: Craig Woolheater on June 4th, 2013
There are many theories circulating around in the Kingdom of Bigfootdom. The predominant theory is that the Bigfoot are descendants of “Gigantopithecus” which they have a fossil record for in China (i.e., Essentially, a partial jawbone and one tooth).

Speaking of the Mapingauri…

Posted by: Craig Woolheater on June 4th, 2013

One might argue how much faith Oren should put in anecdotal evidence provided to him by 50 or so people who say they’ve had encounters with the sloth. Still, it seems odd that scientists, of all people, would question the search for anything thought to be elusive or even impossible to find. Think of the naysayers who used to scoff every time Carl Sagan said there had to be other planets orbiting other suns in other solar systems; now other planets are discovered so often it’s hard to keep track of how many there are.

Loren Coleman provides a little history lesson on an amazing cryptological find near where another deadly tornado hit last Friday. In December 1970, something which moved on all fours raided a chicken coop, leaving a handprint on the door. Local media called the anthropoid visitor the “El Reno Chicken Man.” The prints baffled the Director of the Oklahoma City Zoo. Next in this roundup, CFZ Australia talks to UK amateur Archnologist Carl Portman, the author of A Daintree Diary, which documents his travels through the rainforest of the same name in far north Queensland on the hunt for the elusive Whistling Spider. In the discussion Portman talks about the spider equivalent of the Night Parrot and Tasmanian Tiger, those ‘holy grails’ of the cryptozoological world. Then we have Jeffrey Pritchett posing questions to Nick Redfern on the highly classified Monster Files, his latest book. That's followed by a review of said tome in Monsters In The Filing Cabinet. It's clear that reviewer John Rimmer obviously enjoyed Nick's latest tale of cryptids and government, but wishes for more first hand action; he wants to see Nick "plunging through the jungles of Porto Rico, risking life and limb in the deserts of the southern USA, or hunting vicious man-monkeys on the Shropshire Union Canal." So do we!

Stan Gordon and 911 Bigfoot Caller Stick to Opposing Stories

Dr. Matthew Johnson: The Guttenberg Press, Wittenberg Door, and Facebook

Posted by: Craig Woolheater on June 3rd, 2013
Until recently, Bigfootdom has been controlled by the “Good Ol’ Boys” network. In the past, they controlled the popular Bigfoot Forums, Conferences, Back Room Politics, etc. Then that silly Facebook thing came along in 2004 and revolutionized the world, including Bigfootdom.
All Bigfooters were finally freed up to network with other Bigfooters who shared similar theories, methodologies, and experiences. Reports of unusual Bigfoot encounters were no longer allowed to be swept under the carpet or deep-sixed into the garbage can because the witnesses reported experiences did not fit into the closed-minded, small, rigid box of the “Gigantopithecus Theory.” They could no longer threaten to burn Galileo at the stake.

No Australian aboriginal ever claimed to see a bunyip, yet many have spied the mindai. Yet no Bruce or Sheila can say they've even heard of such a beast. From the laid-back north coast of Down Under, Andrew Nicholson raises awareness of this cespitose snake covering past sightings and its habitat. At the antipode of Australia, Lon Strickler reaps the rewards of running a popular paranormal blog with a purported sighting of a distinctly American cryptid. Was Stacy's Huge Bird Sighting In New Kent Co., Virginia of a thunderbird? Hopping across the pond, Lee Brickley is dying to tell everyone about The Cannock Chase Panther. Though he hasn't had a sighting of his own, tales surrounding Cannock Chase and 'super-moggies' are certain to give skeptics some paws. I mean, pause. About 400km to the north, as the thunderbird flies, Glasgow Boy has a rare still from The G.E. Taylor Film of 1938 and hopes to hear from anyone who can provide more footage and background to this elusive feature.

My response to D.W. Lee's recent post

OK, I appreciate the designation that I am a Walking Encyclopedia of Sasquatch Knowledge, and that I am the next John Green, and that I am the Squatchopedia, but seeing a recent post has caused me to decide to denounce all those designations, because I know no more than anybody else and I am no more knowledgeable than anyone else. I am an analyst and certainly no expert, even if I do have knowledge from reading books and websites and things like that. Yes, I have knowledge of the historical stuff in the Sasquatch field, but I am no more knowledgeable than anyone else. Just wanted to clear that up for everyone. Thank you.
