They're mostly teen-aged girls who are flocking to the small timber-town of Forks, WA, the town featured in Stephanie Meyer's immensely popular Twilight book series that tells of the dilemma a young girl faces when her family moves to the town and she becomes torn between the affections of two youngsters, one a vampire, the other a werewolf. The economically depressed town, a place Meyer has never visited is enjoying a tourism boom. Since most of the town's "Twilight" tourists are teen-aged girls, should teen-aged boys be afraid, very afraid? With trailer from the upcoming motion picture. Elsewhere on the literary scene, minus tourism, frequent Fortean Times contributor Gordon Rutter is requesting Fortean stories from one of the corners of Merrie Olde England at Request - Newcastle Oddities; and there's a search underway for what modern books of a Fortean nature parents would recommend to their children at Fortean Children's Books.

Review: The Bigfoot Mystery 9-21-08

This was a terrific show, with guest Eric Altman, who discussed the upcoming East Coast Bigfoot Conference, coming next weekend, as well as his research into the Pennsylvania Sasquatch. He described some of his encounters, as well as his eventual chairmanship of the Pennsylvania Bigfoot Society. Richie from California called in and told us of some exciting developments in the Santa Cruz Mountains last weekend, where he, Daniel Perez, Michael Rugg and a fellow named Ralph heard and recorded a strange vocalization 30 seconds in duration. We discussed the possibility of the Sasquatch creatures being attracted to power lines, possibly because of the hum, and also the possibility of them using railroad tracks as travel routes. Randy from Canada commented in the chat that he had found tracks near power lines that went on for miles. We discussed a good bit about the possibilities of the routes these Sasquatch will take in their travels, as well. The next show will be on Sunday, October 5th, where we hope to have Indiana naturalist/Sasquatch enthusiast Larry Battson, beginning at 7:00 EST/6:00 Central at The Bigfoot Mystery And as always, we encourage you to please tune in and support great research.

Review: Monsterquest 9-21-08

This was a terrific episode, about an investigation into the Chinese Yeren, the equivalent of our Sasquatch or Bigfoot. Dr. Frank Poirier, a retired anthropologist from Ohio State University, is interviewed regarding some research he has done into the Chinese Wildman. Dr. Poirier admits he threw away a hair of of Wildman, and is skeptical of the existence of the Yeren. Dr. Jeff Meldrum is also profiled and interviewed on his trip to the Hubei Province in China, and is researching whether or not Gigantopithecus could be the explanation for the Yeren. Dr. Zhou Guoxing says the size of the Wildman compares to the size of Giganto, and he has done a good bit of research into it. A sighting in 1976 in Shennongjia prompted the Chinese government to look into it, and Dr. Guoxing led the expedition himself a year later. Dr. Guoxing goes into the different colors the Yeren is observed to have, including red, brown and yellow, even black. Adam Davies is also brought in to track the Yeren. This was the first time an American anthropologist has been allowed to examine the evidence for the Yeren, which is the opportunity given to Dr. Meldrum. The trio (Davies, Meldrum and Guoxing) are headed to the Shennongjia area (see my earlier posting of the presentation Dr. Meldrum gave at the 20th-Annual Ohio Bigfoot Conference for further details). Several witnesses are interviewed on their sightings (one witness saw two of them crossing a road). The location of one of the sightings is near the Lisha River, where a sighting took place last November. Davies and a guide, Zhu Xiaoguang, are investigating the area. Davies shows the Yeren cast to Meldrum, which Meldrum is intrigued by, but is cautious about it. Meldrum and Davies run into a problem-the government will not allow them to go into the park for the expedition. The team is granted only 36 hours to do their investigation, and are led by Xiaoguang and another guide, a park ranger, who had a sighting in 1994. Meldrum and the crew make camp in an area at 9,500 feet, and do a bit of scouting before sunset. The next new episode airs Wednesday night at 9:00 EST/8:00 Central on History, focusing on Giant Bear Attacks. Check local listings for time and channel.

Review: Monsterquest 9-17-08

This episode takes a look at the Lake Crescent, Newfoundland monster eel, with a team of scientists and witnesses, who swear they have seen a large lake monster of some sort. It appears to have a snakelike head and serpentine body, and has been seen quite a bit by local residents of the town of Roberts Arm. Dr. John Casselman has investigated the Algonquin Tribe's legends of large lake monsters, called "pond devils" or "swimming demons." He seems interested in their legends and traditions. A British tourist was attacked by an eel off the coast of Thailand in 2005 which bit through his thumb. A witness named John Rorabeck is interviewed (he is a commercial eel fisherman) and he claims in 1974 he saw a large eel. He attempted to capture the large eel, but was unable to get a good grip on it. A lady named Effie Colbourne is also interviewed about the stories she has heard from previous generations. There is a story of a team of divers who were attacked and surrounded by a group of eels. Joe Nickell of the Skeptical Inquirer is brought in to make an attempt to explain away all the sightings, and a forensic artist is also brought in to sketch the lake monster based on descriptions. A biologist named Richard Haedrich also is profiled on his search for the giant eel. Effie has also had a sighting of "Cressie" and cooperates with a forensic artist on her experience. Several more witnesses are interviewed, and it takes a turn which...well, watch the episode to see for yourself. The next new Wednesday night episode airs Wednesday night, profiling large prehistoric bears, beginning at 9:00 EST/8:00 Central on History. Check local listings for time and channel.

Review: Monsterquest: Boneless Horror

This was a pretty interesting episode, featuring a look at a possible giant octopus in Puget Sound, with a couple of the researchers/divers from the Giant Squid Found? episode, Scott Cassell and Dale Pearson. They put cameras down in the depths to attempt to film one of the Octopus Giganteus, and go on several dives to search for it. They do run into several other types of octopi, however, and manage to only capture photos of starfish and other sealife. There appears to be a photo of a possible arm of an Octopus, but it seems to be a bit unclear. The next new episode airs Sunday night on History Channel, called China's Wildman, featuring Dr. Jeff Meldrum and Adam Davies exploring the Hubei Province in search of the Yeren, beginning at 9:00 EST/8:00 Central. Check local listings for time and channel.
The odd deaths of eleven cows in a pasture where other cattle remained unharmed has Union County, TN, officials puzzled. They say no criminal activity is apparent, nor is there any sign of the cause of death. The cattle were reportedly not mutilated in any way. Were the cattle poisoned or struck by lightning? Veterinary tests are pending.

Blackstone, VA, residents are reluctant to venture out after dark due to sightings of what they think are cougars. Officials from the state wildlife department, perhaps true to form, say the residents are mistaken. Has the Eastern cougar been making a comeback, or will an upcoming report declare the animal extinct despite Blackstone residents' assertions? Meanwhile, another very rare animal has cropped up across the Atlantic, as seen, with video, in Black Fox Spotted in Great Britain for First Time, and yet another rare species has been detected across the Pacific as the Rarest Otter Species Appears in Vietnam.

Review: Beyond The Edge Radio 9-19-08

This was a terrific first hour, with guest Diane Stocking, who discussed her research into the Florida Sasquatch, as well as her new venture Stocking Hominid Research Inc. with her twin Donna Cohrs. I called in and asked Diane some questions and chit-chatted with her about the good time we had at the Ohio Conference, as well as other stuff. Bill Green called in and asked Diane about her research and discussed the Georgia Hoax situation. I have not had the chance to listen to the second hour, but I will at my earliest convenience. Next week, Beyond The Edge Radio broadcasts live from Pitzer's Townhouse Restaurant in Jeanette, Pennsylvania, home of the 2008 East Coast Bigfoot Conference, beginning at 9:00 EST/8:00 Central at Beyond The Edge Radio And as always, we encourage you to please tune in and support great research.

Reversing his position expressed last month, the Premier of New South Wales in Australia is calling for an investigation of the continued sightings of a large feral cat, believed to be a black panther, in the suburban area of western Sydney. Review: The Sasquatch Triangle 9-18-08

This was a GREAT show, with guest Brian Gosselin, former police officer for the town of Whitehall, New York, who discussed in great detail his August 25th, 1976 sighting, as well as his association with longtime researcher Bill Brann, and a bit delving into the Georgia Hoax Situation, but also about the possibilities he ran through in his mind as to what he saw. He made a most interesting comment during the show-he said that is not saying unequivocally that he saw a Bigfoot or Sasquatch, but that what he saw was not a bear, a person in a gorilla suit or a person period. I found that comment very refreshing and enlightening. I called in and asked Brian a few questions which he answered terrifically, and bluetracker called in and claimed a prize of a free year of Don's e-Newsletter for answering correctly the date on which Brian had his sighting. Terry and Treba Jahn were on the line listening to the show as well. Next week, Don welcomes back an old friend of the Sasquatch Triangle, Mr. John Horrigan, to discuss the upcoming Mass UFO/Monster Mash, beginning at 9:00 EST/8:00 Central at The Sasquatch Triangle, Now On NowLive.com And as always, we encourage you to please tune in and support great research.

Rescued by Angels The Paranormal Pastor
From the supernatural playbook, here are two tales, allegedly true, where angelic intervention plucked ordinary people from harm's path. And tales of angels don't end there, as Dublin, Ireland, gets set to host a conference about the supernatural beings, as detailed in Angels Set to be the Next Big Thing. Of course, angels indicate the positive side of the supernatural. The negative side can be found in Loren Coleman's post at The Copycat Effect in the chilling story of the 666 Stabbing Spree.

Monsterquest Tomorrow...

LAKE MONSTERS OF THE NORTH

Something mysterious is lurking around the bottom of Lake Crescent, New Foundland, and they call this creature "Cressie." Native American legends date back centuries and refer to a "Pond Devil" and a "Swimming Demon". And there are modern sightings too, but are witnesses describing a strange, outsized eel or something entirely alien to science? Divers, biologists and forensic sketch artists team up to search for this elusive lake leviathan.

Begins tomorrow night at 9:00 EST/8:00 Central on the History Channel. Check local listings for time and channel.

Announcement...

I am taking a break from listening to every single show out there every week. It has nothing to do with the hosts of the great shows, it's just that a lot of the same information seems to be getting out there, so if folks do not see me as often in the chats or participating in the shows, it is because I am attempting to avoid burnout. I am thinking of skipping Bigfoot Quest tonight, and possibly Don Keating's show Thursday, but I may tune in to Beyond The Edge Radio on Friday. But I will catch the archives of each show.
