Before you ask - the governor in this article is not the current Republican Vice-presidential nominee. Long before Alaska became a state, The Portland Press, a Maine newspaper, published claims by Colonel C. F. Fowler that he had purchased fresh mastodon tusks from a native hunter and that Governor Swineford, administrator of the territory at the time, also concluded the mastodon still survived in large numbers in Alaska. Elsewhere at Cryptomundo, there are more trailcam photos of an elusive African forest mammal in Blobokapi, and a beautiful new species of reptile has been found far from its ancestral home, as shown, with photos, in Fiji: New Iguana Species Discovered. Meanwhile, Phantoms & Monsters has the photo and story of the Chicken-Footed Duck (That) Would Rather Be a 'Duck Out of Water'.
