Bigfoot Files: Episode 3

Posted by: Craig Woolheater on November 1st, 2013
The ‘Almasty’ is Russia’s very own Bigfoot. It has been written about for over 300 years, and Russia’s Almasty hunters claim there have been over 10,000 encounters over the years.
The big theory in Russia is that it’s a surviving hominid, possibly even a Neanderthal.<

Looking For Bigfoot on Halloween?

Posted by: Craig Woolheater on October 31st, 2013
In search of Bigfoot? Enjoy one of these outings while you’re at it
Halloween is a great time to search the dark North woods for Bigfoot. And maybe you’ll find a nice hike.
Of the many Bigfoot sightings compiled on the Internet, the number in Washington is striking. If you look into what kind of territory the reports suggest the creature prefers, maybe that’s no surprise.

Bigfoot Spotted on Google Earth?

Posted by: Craig Woolheater on October 31st, 2013
Don’t ask me who is sitting around probing every inch of of the North American wilderness on Google Earth looking for evidence of Bigfoot. All that matters is that someone did it, and that the image follows the classic Bigfoot sighting model: Blurry and inconclusive.

What Now? Go Find A Living Ancient Polar Bear!

Akulivik hunters recently encountered a Bigfoot along a caribou trail in a remote area near the Hudson Bay. The Bigfoot was spotted ahead of them on the trail and apparently saw them as competition for his caribou prey so he defended its territory by throwing rocks at the hunting party. Bigfoot wasn't completely inconsiderate though, as he left some nice, clearly imprinted footprints behind for researchers to ooh and ahhh over...Meanwhile, people near Myrtle Beach, SC claim that a Mysterious creature in Picayune resembles 'El Chupacabra'. No, it doesn't. Unless Chupacabra has put on a "Coyote with mange" costume for Halloween that's simply a coyote with mange. In these cases, it's safe to assume the old adage, "When you hear hoofbeats, think mangy coyotes"...or something like that...Karl Shuker shares the tale of another creatively named cryptid that became part of Sioux mythology and was identified when the bones of the Thunderhorse were found. Oddly enough, the bones belonged to an ancient rhino-like creature that actually is distantly related to horses.

The big, hairy guy has been accepted as one of their own by the residents of Whitehall, N.Y. after nearly 40 years of consistent sightings in the town after a 1976 incident (the Abdair Road incident) put the place on the map. However, Bigfoot's been prowling the deep woods around Whitehall for hundreds of years, says writer and researcher Paul Bartholomew, with reports originating with the Iroquois 200 years ago. But New York isn't the only northern historical hotspot for Bigfoot sightings as this 126 year old newspaper report reveals a 10-foot-tall ‘wild man’ was killed in 1886 after apparently killing three men camping in a remote location. Then again, this tall tale was passed along by word-of-mouth with absolutely no evidence so there's no way to verify its authenticity. It's a bit funny how even 126 years later even with all our technology, we still sometimes have the same problem!

This writer believes that if the scientific community would be a little more open-minded in their acceptance of evidence, the mystery of Bigfoot would be considered solved. In other words, if science would accept the "hard" evidence," like footprints and DNA evidence, Bigfoot would officially exist. Instead it seems that nothing less than an actual Bigfoot, dead or alive, will convince skeptics, which is the conundrum Bigfoot researchers have faced for the past 50 years or so. The same rule applies to the Loch Ness Monster, which has refused to give up any evidence of its existence other than a few indistinct photos and numerous eyewitness reports like this one: Nessie on land-The Margaret Munro case, from 1934 in which a woman claims to have seen Nessie out of the water and walking around on the banks of the Loch. Unfortunately, she didn't have a camera, but she gave an incredibly detailed description of the creature that holds up to scrutiny 80 years later (Glasgow Boy conducts some impressive research and testing here).
