The Saint who Became a Cat Beachcombing's Bizarre History Blog
In the rather unusual category of saints-who-turn-into-animals, we have St. Agatha, a martyr saint from Catania, Sicily, whose followers stretch from up the Atlantic coast all the way to the UK. In the south of France there is a legend that the saint would appear in the guise of a cat to women who had the impertinence to weave or wash on her day--5 February. (By the way, the saint's breasts, which were removed by Roman torturers, can apparently be found in relic collections at Palermo and St Trophime.) Still more feline follies in Viking and Pirate Black Cats, which tells of the belief that the Vikings, after they ransacked and pillaged a village, would leave a black cat behind. Is this where the notion of black cats being unlucky creatures comes from?
