Results are in from testing on hair samples collected during an expedition last year in search of the elusive orang pendek, an apelike cryptid featured in many eyewitness reports from Sumatra. Adam Davies, author of Extreme Expeditions, led last year's trip to Indonesia, the fifth such trip to the region for Davies. Previous expeditions had turned up hair and prints from the suspected cryptid, and analysis concluded the hairs were from a previously unknown primate related to both known species of orangutan. If the new DNA examination proved the hairs were from either of the known species, it would prove the creatures are in an area they were not previously known to roam. If they proved to be an unknown species, it would prove "that there is another great ape living in Indonesia." Danish scientist Lars Thomas announces the conclusions in the video that accompanies this report from John Carlson. And in another case of DNA testing of hair samples, this time found in the United Kingdom and pointing to the presence of a certain species of large cat, Centre for Fortean Zoology Director Jon Downes confesses I Do, Apparently, Owe an Apology (and am Very Happy to Give It). Downes' apology stems from discussion during last weekend's Weird Weekend 2010 event in England.
