The massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico threatens corals, sponges, crustaceans, fish, birds and countless other life forms. And if history is any indicator, notes Ken Gerhard, "an extraordinary animal swimming deep, within those waters" may also be threatened. Specifically, the great Sea Serpent, that monstrous, snake-like beast that has been described by sailors for centuries. A few -- admittedly old -- reports from the Gulf are mentioned.
