DVD Review: Edge: A Decade of Decadence

The latest release from WWE Home Video showcases one of the most controversial and exciting wrestlers in the business. The man known as the "Rated-R Superstar" starts from humble beginnings as Adam Copeland in Toronto, Canada, where he trains to be a Pro-Wrestler, in addition to his life-long friend Jay Reso (AKA Christian) who he teams with in the late-'90's and they become one of the funniest and most talented teams in the history of the WWE, meeting teams such as the Hardyz and The Dudley Boyz and trading the Tag-Team titles back and forth. Edge finally broke out on his own and became Intercontinental Champion, and he also faces some top-quality opponents such as Eddie Guerrero, Lance Storm, Test, Kurt Angle, Mr. Perfect, Randy Orton and Edge. Later on, he trades the WWE title with John Cena and Rob Van Dam, and also the World Heavyweight title with the Undertaker and Batista. He also faces off with Hardcore Legend Mick Foley, Rey Mysterio, Kane, Matt Hardy and other top Superstars. I do recommend this DVD set (3 Discs) for all fans of this controversial but highly-rated wrestler. 4 1/2 out of 5 stars.

DVD Review: Tropic Thunder

ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS PARODY/SATIRE!!!

This is a brilliant film, anchored by strong performances by Ben Stiller as fading action star Tugg Speedman, Jack Black as drug-addled comedy star Jeff Portnoy and especially the strong performance of Robert Downey Jr. as method actor Kirk Lazarus, who actually plays an African-American character named Sergeant Osiris, and stays in character even off set. They are filming the story of Four Leaf Tayback (Nick Nolte) who is not all he seems to be, and is working with a special-effects pyrotechnics guy on the film based on Tayback's book, titled Tropic Thunder. The other two actors, rapper Alpa Chino (Brandon T. Jackson) and Kevin Sandusky (Jay Baruchel) are playing different characters as well, but the group of actors gets more than they bargained for when they run into real-life drug runner Vietnamese thugs, led by a child. Speedman is captured by the thugs, which prompts the other actors to mount a rescue operation. Tom Cruise (who is essentially unrecognizable in prosthetic makeup) also co-stars as producer Les Grossman, in a hilarious star turn, as well as Matthew McConaughey as Speedman's agent Rick "Pecker" Peck. This is a hilarious "movie-within-a-movie" which really scores on all fronts. 5 Stars!!!!!!

Booklet Review: Bigfoot! He's Still Out There! By Bonnie West

This is a rather interesting booklet/pamphlet, very rare (I got it in an eBay auction), and it has some true-life encounters from the Grays' Harbor County, Washington area, including the Verlin Herrington and Fred Bradshaw encounters (both law-enforcement officers). The author does get one fact wrong regarding the Gigantopithecus Skull mock-up by Grover Krantz-she states that it was made up of skull fragments from Sasquatches all over the world (which it was not, only from Gigantopithecus teeth and a jawbone of a Giganto and a mock-up skull cap). That only takes up about 32 pages of the pamphlet; the rest of it has interesting fictional stories of sightings and encounters which are fair to good, but not great. I would rate this booklet about a 3 1/2 out of 5 stars simply for the reports from the Grays' Harbor County area.

DVD Review: A Christmas Story

Terrific Holiday Classic!!!

This movie, released in 1983, features a slice of Americana in a fictional Indiana town named Hulman, where Ralphie Parker (Peter Billingsley), 9 years old, is campaigning, in subtle and not-so-subtle ways, to get himself a Red Ryder BB Gun, but his mother (Melinda Dillon, Harry and The Hendersons, Close Encounters of the Third Kind) insists he will "shoot his eye out." Meanwhile, his father, the "Old Man" (Darren McGavin, Kolchak: The Night Stalker) is battling his malfunctioning furnace and the hounds of their hillbilly neighbors the Bumpuses, and his little brother Randy (Ian Petrella) seems to get the brunt of childhood bullying, along with Ralphie and his friends Flick (Scott Schwartz) and Schwartz (R.D. Robb), by Scut Farkus (Zack Ward) with yellow eyes (!)  After a series of misadventures and "the F_ _ _ Word" Ralphie does get his prized possession for Christmas, but nearly indeed does shoot his eye out. I highly recommend this DVD purchase, although the features are a bit skimpy, only giving us a theatrical trailer. Still, the movie is great. 4 1/2 out of 5 stars!!!

Bigfooter of The Year Spoiler Alert!!!

In the December 2008 edition of the Bigfoot Times Newsletter, Daniel Perez has made a bit of a controversial choice for his Bigfooter of the Year, mainly that of The Founder and Chairman of the Bigfoot Field Researchers' Organization, Mr. Matt Moneymaker. It is certainly a controversial choice, but Daniel has obviously made his decision, mainly based on the criteria of the excellent database on the BFRO Website. I do send out hearty congratulations to the Bigfooter of The Year, Matt Moneymaaker.
