DVD Review: A Christmas Story

Terrific Holiday Classic!!!

This movie, released in 1983, features a slice of Americana in a fictional Indiana town named Hulman, where Ralphie Parker (Peter Billingsley), 9 years old, is campaigning, in subtle and not-so-subtle ways, to get himself a Red Ryder BB Gun, but his mother (Melinda Dillon, Harry and The Hendersons, Close Encounters of the Third Kind) insists he will "shoot his eye out." Meanwhile, his father, the "Old Man" (Darren McGavin, Kolchak: The Night Stalker) is battling his malfunctioning furnace and the hounds of their hillbilly neighbors the Bumpuses, and his little brother Randy (Ian Petrella) seems to get the brunt of childhood bullying, along with Ralphie and his friends Flick (Scott Schwartz) and Schwartz (R.D. Robb), by Scut Farkus (Zack Ward) with yellow eyes (!)  After a series of misadventures and "the F_ _ _ Word" Ralphie does get his prized possession for Christmas, but nearly indeed does shoot his eye out. I highly recommend this DVD purchase, although the features are a bit skimpy, only giving us a theatrical trailer. Still, the movie is great. 4 1/2 out of 5 stars!!!
