Reviews: HBM's Crypto-Corner/Bigfoot Mystery/Sasquatch Experience 10-5-08
HBM's was pretty great, with guest Darin Richardson, who discussed his book Bigfoot and I: A Personal Journey Into The World of Sasquatch, as well as his research and interest in the subject. He also talked about his early life, his inspiration for writing his book, his impetus for his radio show and other subjects. Bill Green was brought on briefly to ask Darin a couple of questions. This was the kickoff to Authors' Month and a Half, which continues next week at a special early start time of 4:00 EST/3:00 Central with guest Dr. Jeff Meldrum (Sasquatch: Legend Meets Science).

On The Bigfoot Mystery, Darin and I had Billy Willard on, who told some of his funny stories about his experiences and sightings, especially his humorous experiences with Tom Lancaster, his experience in Texas where something grabbed his leg while he slept in his tent, hearing something mimicing his snoring and some other experiences. Bill Green called in and asked about the d*&n Georgia Hoax and also asked Billy the standard question about new sightings or footprint discoveries. Richie from California also called in and told of some vocalization experiences he has had as well as finding footprints. The BM will return in two weeks on the 19th, at 7:00 EST/6:00 Central.

Dunno what Sean, James and Melissa have planned for next week, but it begins at 9:00 EST/8:00 Central.

Editorial: 50 Years of Bigfoot
(NO, that does not read 50 Years WITH Bigfoot; this is not about the Janice Carter book).August 1958. Northern California, in Del Norte and Humboldt Counties. A road building crew, contracted by the Wallace brothers (Ray, Roy and Wilbur) and owned by Thomas Sourwine, experiences unusual activity as they attempt to build roads through forest land. Strange and large footprints are found in and around road building sites, as well as camps, and occasionally sightings of large, hairy, manlike creatures are made as well. Catskinner (one who drives a bulldozer) Jerry Crew has seen tracks around his bulldozer for over a month and is very puzzled by these events, and decides to share this with the world, so his friend, taxidermist Bob Titmus encourages him to buy some Plaster of Paris and shows him how to cast with it, and Jerry casts one large 17 1/2-inch track, 7 1/2 inches across the ball of the foot and takes it to the local newspaper, the Humboldt Times, where editor Andrew Genzoli writes up an article about the strange footprint and also displays a photo of Crew holding the cast. The creature needed a name, however, and that name was provided by Rocky Bemis' Mom-Big Foot. The actual headline read "New Sasquatch Found-It's Called Big Foot," and it became a household word. Before this, the creature was known in the Pacific Northwest as Sasquatch, a phrase coined by former teacher J.W. Burns, and know variously as booger, wildman, gorilla, haints and a variety of other names nationwide. Before the name Big Foot came along, the most famous hominid was the Himalayan Mountains-dwelling Abominable Snowman, or Yeti. Of course, there were reports for thousands of years of giant hairy bipeds, including the Ape Canyon, Ostman and William Roe accounts which were all pre-1958, but finally in October of '58, there was a name, a marketable name, to go along with the creatures themselves. Sometime later (not sure when, possibly in the 1970's) the creature's nickname was shortened to Bigfoot, which is all one word and much more recognizable. Of course, the most famous sighting and recording of a Bigfoot is the Patterson/Gimlin Movie, but it is still today in dispute, over 40 years after it was taken. It is in dispute because of a certain Bob Heironimus who claims to have been in the suit. The original 1958 tracks are also in question because of the death of Ray Wallace in late-2002 in which his family "'fessed up" to Ray's hoaxing of tracks in the Bluff Creek area and the media ran with it and believed that Wallace's death destroyed Bigfoot once and for all. Well, maybe the one-two punch of the Wallace "confession" and the allegations from Bob Heironimus regarding the P/G Movie told the general public that Sasquatch is nothing but a myth, but it did NOT destroy the reports or the popularity of America's favorite hairy biped. Bigfoot is seen in many advertisements, such as the popular Jack Link's beef jerky franchise, as well as being used in various commercials such as Cold Stone Creamery Ice Cream Parlor, Ask.com ads, a Canadian courier company and various other advertising campaigns. Bigfoot is seen practically all over TV and the Internet, sometimes in a humorous context, other times in serious scientific studies. Even if the creature itself does not exist (but I know differently, having seen one ten years ago today), it is still a great cultural phenomenon and a truly recognizable icon worldwide. Hail to Bigfoot-50 years and it still remains elusive.

He began his presentation by saying he appreciates enthusiasm, but cautions against losing objectivity and wants to see critical thinking take hold with reports. He has just returned from China for filming an episode of Monsterquest to investigate the Yeren. The origins of Bigfoot were discussed, as to whether it is Gigantopithecus or not (Meldrum says it is at least a strong candidate). Dr. Meldrum hooked up with Zhou Guoxing to research the Yeren, which lives in the Hubai and Shennogjia Provinces where there are vertical mountains (!). Grover Krantz also went there in Southern China several years ago on an expedition. According to Dr. Guoxing, the Wildman is not the same as Sasquatch so far as size (it is a little shorter, ala Orang Pendek). Shennong was a God interested in herbs in the mountains, and built a ladder or scaffold to reach the herbs, prompting the name Shennongjia, which means "Shennong's Ladder." Meldrum's working hypothesis is that the Giganto is our North American Ape, and Meldrum went into the work of Russ Ciochon and his appearance on Giganto: The Real King Kong. Dr. Meldrum commented that the fossil record is biased when it comes to Giganto. An interesting observation was made about an orangutan which took a catfish out of a net and ate it, and other orang followed suit. Meldrum also said that there is a bit of a misconception about the entire Bering Straits Land Bridge being a frozen tundra, when in fact some parts of it were temperate jungle. Dr. Guoxing is not convinced that the Yeren and Giganto are the same thing, and the official position of the scientific community is cool and somewhat nonchalant. Meldrum showed a slide of a Chinese footprint cast which resembles a cast made in Washington State by Paul Freeman. Meldrum discusses the Anthropoidipes Ameriborealis, the North American Ape footprint, the archetype of which is the Patterson/Gimlin Movie casts. Meldrum said he would eventually put all his virtual cast collection online.

Review: Bigfoot Quest 9-30-08
This was a GREAT show, a continuation of the discussion of the East Coast Bigfoot Conference, with unscheduled guests Bruce (Creature Seeker) and Kelly Beverly (Squatch Biatch_13), as well as Billy Willard, discussing some activity that occurred after the Conference, such as woodknocking. Kelly, Billy and Bruce were part of a group researching in the woods, along with others. I called in to talk to Bob and Mike about their experiences at the Conference, and also to ask Bob and Mike and Bruce about their impressions of Bill Dranginis' Eye Gotcha Cam system, and they were deeply impressed with the working model, which of course more can be added to, such as audio equipment, zoom lens, infrared, thermal imagers and other bits of equipment. Big cat reports from Australia continue, and got a little stranger with a report of the shooting of a large black cat in 2005. The cat killed in 2005 weighed 40 kilograms, or about 120 pounds. The strangest thing though, is that DNA testing revealed this large cat was a feral descendant of domestic species. Michael Williams of the Centre for Fortean Zoology Australia says, "We don't know if the source of these reports is some kind of introduced exotic cat species or a feral cat mutation." This was a GREAT show, with many callers, giving an overview of the 2008 East Coast Bigfoot Conference this past weekend. Bigfoot Lore Draws Believers, Skeptics Pittsburgh Tribune-Review
The 2008 East Coast Bigfoot Conference in Jeanette, PA, took place over the weekend, and over 400 people were believed to have attended. Several attendees, ranging from the curious to the skeptical, were interviewed for this article, as well as some of the active Bigfoot investigators who attended.
