Review: Monsterquest 7-23-08
This episode focused on the Chupacabras, or "Goat Sucker", seen in Texas and Puerto Rico. There were corpses found of animals with all the blood sucked out of them, and there were some eyewitness accounts of a hairless almost canine-like/kangaroo-like creature on four legs. Phylis Canion was among the first to see it in southwest Texas, and had some of her chickens sucked dry of blood. A reporter, Joe Conger of KENS-5 in San Antonio, took up the case as far as reporting. Civil Defense officials were put in charge of investigating these cases, but they are just as puzzled as everyone else. Interestingly enough, the description of the mystery animal is different in Puerto Rico then it is in Texas, looking much more like a spiny two-legged creature with glowing red eyes. A witness in the Island Nation was interviewed about an encounter he had with the mystery animal. A farmer in Texas has found his chickens drained of blood, and saw the Chupacabra 4 times. He had a rifle propped in a tree to attempt to kill the creature, which he did. Ken Gerhard and an associate go out to attempt to catch one of the beasts and to find trace evidence. The farmer did have the bones of the mystery animal he saw, and these are sent for DNA testing, with some interesting results. Plus, Phylis shows Gerhard some of the body parts she also has, which are also sent off for DNA testing, which results in...well, I will not reveal any more. Watch the episode for yourself. In 1995, a beast dubbed "El Chupacabra," spanish for "The Goatsucker," was first sighted and accused of killing and draining the blood of hundreds of farm animals in Puerto Rico. Eyewitnesses describe it as a two-legged reptile-like beast with sharp claws and sharper fangs. DVD Review: Batman: Gotham Knight
This short film, produced by the same crew that brought us Batman Begins and the current runaway hit The Dark Knight, is a series of six interlocking stories which give different interpretations of the Caped Crusader. Here are complete synopses of the six stories (WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD!!!)
Have I Got A Story For You (Studio 4°C)
Written by Josh Olson. A street kid meets with three of his friends at a skate park. All three of them claim to have seen Batman earlier that day. Batman's battle with the Man in Black, a high-tech criminal, is told in reverse chronological order, with three very different interpretations of Batman's form and abilities: one describes him as a living shadow that can melt away and reappear at will (similar to Vampire Batman), another describes him as a half-bat, half-man creature (similar to Man-Bat), and one describes him as a combat robot called RoBat. At the end, Batman pursues the Man in Black to the skatepark, and captures him with the help of the fourth street kid. The fourth kid is able to see what Batman truly is after seeing him sustain injuries from the battle: a warrior in a Batsuit. He proceeded to tell his experience to his friends after Batman disappeared. Though the film credits give "story by" acknowledgment to first-time writer Jordan Goldberg, Josh Olsen acknowledged it was actually based on a very similar story by Frank Robbins called "The Batman Nobody Knows"[5]. The story was first printed in Batman #250 in 1973, and subsequently adapted as "Legends of the Dark Knight" in the original Batman: The Animated Series. According to Olsen: "The first time it's stealing, the second time it's borrowing, the third time you're creating a genre,".[6]

Written by Greg Rucka. Crispus Allen and Anna Ramirez are partners and members of the Major Crimes Unit that have been hand-picked by James Gordon. The two are assigned to take the recently captured Man in Black (captured during Have I Got A Story For You), revealed to be Jacob Feely, an escaped inmate from Arkham Asylum with an expertise in advanced electronics and explosives, to the Narrows to be incarcerated. On their way, they argue over whether Batman can be trusted, with Allen saying that they're just running errands for a vigilante, while Ramirez replies that Batman has changed Gotham for the better. As they are heading back, Allen declares his intention to leave the MCU, and Ramirez pulls into a vacant lot to confront Allen. However, the two get caught in a confrontation between gangs, The Russian and Sal Maroni. Maroni's men are gunned down, and Maroni takes refuge behind Allen and Ramirez's patrol car, which The Russian subsequently destroys with a rocket launcher. Ramirez and Maroni manage to get clear in time, while Allen is rescued by Batman, who proceeds to take out The Russian and his men. Maroni then threatens to kill Ramirez, but he, too, is dispatched by Batman. Batman recognizes Allen and Ramirez as Gordon's hand-picked officers, remarks that Gordon is a good judge of character, and disappears.

Written by Jordan Goldberg. An accident involving a new WayneCom satellite's gyroscopic electromagnetic guidance system gives Lucius Fox an idea for a device that will electromagnetically deflect small-arms fire. Bruce Wayne takes the device and attends a charity golf tournament being held by developer Ronald Marshall, with whom he discusses the mysterious death of a woman, Teresa Williams, who had opposed some of Marshall's plans. During the tournament, Wayne secretly takes Marshall's PDA device. Later that night, as Batman, he hijacks a boat owned by Sal Maroni and drives it alongside a boat owned by rival gang leader The Russian and proceeds to attack both gangs at once, with assistance from his new device. He attempts to force a truce between the two gang leaders until he can get evidence against them, but is disrupted when one of Maroni's men fires at him. The bullet deflects and instead hits one of The Russian's men. Distressed, Batman takes the injured man to the hospital. Later, he returns the device to Fox, stating that the device works too well, and that he is willing to put his life on the line, but no one else's.

Written by David S. Goyer. The police respond to a riot in a cathedral where Cardinal O'Fallon was giving a sermon. According to eyewitness testimony, the Cardinal was abducted by a large lizard-monster and taken down into the crypts below the cathedral. Lieutenant Gordon, Crispus Allen, and Anna Ramirez investigate; Gordon has a brief conversation with Batman, who agrees with Gordon's theory that the Scarecrow's fear toxin is behind the riot as the doctor has been at large since the riot at the Narrows (during the event of Batman Begins). Batman gives Gordon an earpiece that will allow them to stay in contact and descends below ground, trying to find Cardinal O'Fallon and his abductor. A homeless man living in an abandoned subway station identifies the abductor as Killer Croc. Batman and Gordon briefly discuss the villain's past, but are cut off when Killer Croc himself shows up, under the influence of the fear toxin, and attacks Batman. Batman defeats him, but not before sustaining a bite that transfers some of the toxin to him. He then finds Cardinal O'Fallon being put on trial and sentenced to death by the Scarecrow, who is unhappy with O'Fallon's efforts to help the homeless. Batman leaps in to defend the Cardinal. Using the methane already present in the room, he sparks an explosion that destroys several water pipes, flooding the area and allowing him to escape with the Cardinal. Gordon appears in a helicopter to retrieve the Cardinal and offers to help Batman as well, but Batman refuses, saying, "Maybe next time."

Written by Brian Azzarello. Continuing on from In Darkness Dwells, Batman is shot in the stomach by a man hallucinating in the sewers of Gotham. He cauterizes the wound and attempts to get out from underground, reflecting on his experiences with managing pain as he does so. First, he remembers volunteering with a relief effort and assisting a doctor in performing surgery without anesthesia. Next, he reflects on the lessons he learned from a woman named Cassandra, who was cast out of her community for disguising herself as a boy in an attempt to join a religious sect. Over several months, she teaches him to minimize his pain to the point where he can control it, sleeping on a bed of needles or standing on hot coals without reacting. One night, several young men appear to harass Cassandra, who takes their blows without seeming to feel them. Bruce steps in to defend her, not only demonstrating his ability to withstand their attacks, but defeating them all with his martial arts skills. Cassandra then tells him to leave, saying that he has learned what he came to learn. She then comments on how Bruce's pain was beyond her, or possibly even his, ability to handle, but how it also appeared to be leading him down a path he desired. Back in the present, Batman ends up in a gutter, where he discovers a cache of guns buried in the garbage. Alfred arrives to assist him and tells Batman to give him his hand so he can pull him out of the gutter, but Batman, arms full of guns, replies that he can't.

Written by Alan Burnett. Bruce Wayne has a flashback to the murder of his parents. In his penthouse, he examinines the firearms he took from the underground tunnel's gutter (during the event of Working Through Pain) which he intends to turn in to the police. Wayne admits to Alfred that even though he vowed never to use them in the memory of his parents, he can still understand the temptation to use one. Meanwhile, in another city, an assassin known as Deadshot carries out an assassination on a local mayor and returns to his tropical base. There, one of his associates hires him to carry out a hit in Gotham. It is revealed that The Russian has put out a hit on Lieutenant Gordon, and Batman is called in to protect him. Batman gives Crispus Allen Ronald Marshall's handheld PDA device (which he stole as Bruce Wayne in Field Test), containing a link to encrypted e-mails proving that Ronald Marshall hired Deadshot in the past. He then follows Gordon's motorcade, with Alfred providing satellite-imagery assistance using the new WayneCom satellites. Deadshot attempts to shoot Gordon from a moving train, but Batman deflects the bullet. Deadshot then gleefully reveals that Batman was his real target the entire time, and that the threat against Gordon was merely a ruse to draw him out. He opens fire as the train enters a tunnel, and as Batman attempts to charge Deadshot, he is injured, falling off the train. Deadshot advances to where he saw Batman fall, gloating, but is ambushed from behind and disarmed. He and Ronald Marshall are arrested. Wayne confides to Alfred about how similar the fight in the tunnel seemed to the night his parents were murdered, and comments that "I've been trying to stop those two bullets all these years." He expresses discouragement, and Alfred agrees, but adds that he thinks Bruce has a higher purpose. Wayne looks up at the sky and sees the Bat-Signal.

Book Review: The Unleashing by Clint Romag
This book, clocking in at just over 100 pages, is a true page-turner which keeps the reader glued to each page. It follows the story of Chad Gamin, his friend Shane and his father Willard, along with a group of campers and hunters, in the forests of Canada, who seem to be settling in for a good hunting trip for a week, when everything goes horribly wrong when Shane shoots what he thinks is a bear, but turns out to be a young Bigfoot. When he cuts off a part of the hand of this youngling and he and Chad return to camp, they are followed by a large Sasquatch, possibly the father or mother, and this sets off a chain reaction of terror and slaughter unlike any seen in even the movies. The entire clan of Bigfoot individuals in that area goes completely ballistic against any human and they willfully prey on humans, which leads to a most interesting conclusion and many narrow escapes. This book is written in the vein of The Shadowkiller and Dark Woods, with a touch of Jaws thrown in for good measure. I do recommend this crypto-fiction novel, even if it is not exactly an accurate portrayal of the true nature of the Forest Giants.

Story on UFO Watcher Raised Some Disturbing Questions Daily Gazette
An article in this Schenectady, NY, newspaper prompted this op-ed piece by UFO skeptic Peter Huston. Key quote: "After 60 years plus..., ufologists still have not assembled enough evidence...to obtain a decent government grant, prepare a satisfying exhibit in a reputable museum or provide a single, solid chapter in a legitimate school science textbook." Meanwhile, the NZ Skeptics Society is getting ready to kick off its annual conference, bringing forth the New Zealand group's prediction UFOs to Hit Hamilton! Elsewhere, after reporting a few days ago about a summer camp in Alabama teaching children skepticism, we find much the same thing in a camp near Buffalo, NY, where the national Director of the Council for Secular Humanism became part of the act when Camp Inquiry Encourages Children's Skeptical Side. Those distant thumps you're hearing may be the sudden closings of little minds.

First of all, Sean, you are a great American. Second of all, I watched your recent report on the Honey Island Swamp Monster with great interest, being a longtime enthusiast of hairy hominids such as Bigfoot or Sasquatch, the Yeti or Abominable Snowman and the Australian Yowie. Usually, I am used to seeing the media at large (and unfortunately, sometimes, Fox News as well) ridicule and mock Bigfoot and the folks who research those hairy hominids. Your report on the Honey Island Swamp Monster had none of that mockery or ridicule, and was quite well-balanced and objective. I want to thank you for treating the subject with respect, and it would be great to see you do a segment on hairy hominids once in a while. One person I can recommend is Dr. Jeff Meldrum, professor of anatomical anthropology at Idaho State University in Pocatello, who wrote an excellent book called Sasquatch: Legend Meets Science. Another is Dr. John Bindernagel, a retired wildlife biologist who wrote another excellent book titled North America's Great Ape: The Sasquatch. Those two are very credible individuals, and have a good deal of experience in studying these mystery hominids. Anyway, great segment on the Honey Island Swamp Monster, and keep up the good work. Fox News had a segment on The Honey Island Swamp Monster Tonight...
...and it was actually fair to the subject. It was on Hannity's America, and Dana Holyfield was interviewed to give her impressions on the unusual hairy hominid. Editorial: What are The Best Bigfoot Documentaries?
There have been many documentaries released on the subject of Bigfoot over the years, more especially since the 1970's, with the granddaddy of them all, Bigfoot: The Mysterious Monster (AKA The Mysterious Monsters) as well as the original In Search Of... with no less than 4 shows devoted to Bigfoot or Bigfoot-Like Creatures. There was also the Smithsonian-sponsored special Monsters: Mysteries or Myths? which had footage later used in B:TMM. There was also Bigfoot: Man Or Beast? (made in 1972, but later combined with Robert W. Morgan's documentary The Search For Bigfoot). Rounding out the '70's was 1978's Manbeast: Myth or Monster produced by Alan Landsburg (ISO) and featuring Peter Byrne. In the '80's and '90's, the documentaries were limited mainly to television, with programs such as Sightings and Unsolved Mysteries presenting new segments on the mystery hominoids, as well as Arthur C. Clarke's Mysterious World and Into The Unknown, as well as Ancient Mysteries devoting two hour-long segments to hairy hominids. Into the 21st Century, there has been a plethora of documentary/reality-TV devoted to hair-covered individuals, and the main individual responsible for some of the best programming on the mystery hominoids is Doug Hajicek and his production company Whitewolf Entertainment. They produced the gold-standard of Bigfoot documentaries, Sasquatch: Legend Meets Science and Mysterious Encounters, (2003) as well as Giganto: The Real King Kong (2005) and Monsterquest (2007-???). The newest series has devoted several segments to different hairy hominids around the world, with at least 4 more planned for the new season of the hit History series. Plus, Sci-Fi Channel has devoted a few segments to Sasquatch or related hominids on Destination Truth and Sci-Fi Investigates, and Discovery Channel devoted an episode of Best Evidence to Bigfoot. Plus, there have been independent documentarians who have emerged to create independent productions, such as Jay Michael, Autumn Williams, Don Keating, Scott Herriott and Ronald Roseman. But, what are the BEST documentaries? My top 5 are, in no particular order:

Editorial: Repeat Offenders (In Bigfoot Movies)
Many of us love to be entertained by Bigfoot Documentaries and also feature-length films, and some of us have quite a large DVD Collection of both. This is about feature-length films, and actors who star in more than one movie based on Bigfoot. The actor who is best known to be in multiple Bigfoot projects is Lance Henriksen, who starred in Sasquatch (The Untold), Abominable and Sasquatch Mountain (AKA Devil On The Mountain) between 2002 and 2006. He also narrated the Fox-TV Special World's Greatest Hoaxes: Secrets Finally Revealed. However, he is not the only three-peater in Bigfoot-related projects; Matt McCoy starred in Bigfoot: The Unforgettable Encounter in 1994, Little Bigfoot in 1997 and Abominable in 2006. Rance Howard, veteran character actor and father of Oscar-Winning Director Ron Howard, also starred in Bigfoot: The Unforgettable Encounter and in Sasquatch Mountain (Rance's son Clint was also in B:TUE). And, if we really wanted to, we could play a game of Six Degrees of Separation with some of these actors, such as that Rance Howard starred in B:TUE with Matt McCoy, who starred with Lance Henriksen in Abominable, as well as Howard co-starring with Henriksen in Sasquatch Mountain. Not too sure if there are any other correlations to make, but I do not know of any more at the moment. So, next time you stick one of your Bigfoot DVDs in the machine, you might see familiar faces in more than one Bigfoot Movie.

This was a great show, with guest George Knapp, who has investigated Area 51 and also the famous Skinwalker Ranch in Utah, which has some strange occurrences going on, such as UFOs, Bigfoot, Dogmen, Ghostly phenomenon and something called the Skinwalker, a spiritual figure which seems to be a witch or wizard-type entity. I called in to ask about the Bipedal Dogmen, as well as what the Skinwalker was and what the distance was from Area 51 to the Ranch. Would Bigfoot Tracker be making such extravagant claims if they had nothing to backup what they say?
