DNA researchers are pointing to evidence they say shows Earth's human population faced extinction seventy millenia ago and may have been reduced to as few as 2,000 people planet wide. They point to drought conditions in Africa as the culprit in the near extinction. There's further commentary in Human Line 'Nearly Split inTwo'.

A team of Dutch researchers have discovered that below-ground and above-ground insects communicate their occupancy of plants on which they feast through chemical means. Leaf eaters and root feeders apparently communicate to ensure only one is infesting a plant at any given time.
