The Mysterious Sea Monk Phantoms & Monsters
Lon Strickler posts what is known about medieval encounters with a sea creature often referred to as the Sea Monk, since people of that period thought the creature sported a manlike body with the tonsorial appearance monks from the abbeys of Europe favored. The question remains, however, what was this mysterious creature? Meanwhile, what is possibly the latest addition to the primate line is revealed in "A New Primate Species in Sumatra," written by Adam Davies, author of Extreme Expeditions: Travel Adventures Stalking the World's Mystery Animals, as the cover story for the freely downloadable PDF from the Society for Scientific Exploration EdgeScience Magazine Number 7. Elsewhere, Dr. Andrew May notes a recent episode of the Canadian History Channel documentary "Beast Legends" as he recounts the story of the dragon upon whose lair legend says the Polish city of Krakow was built, adding the television crew's hypothesis of how the Polish dragon contrived to breathe fire, and asking why no known animals have evolved to do this, as seen in Dragons and Dinosaurs. Also, a Blue Mountains resort in Australia has found a triple rarity to entertain visitors, as detailed in Wolgan Valley's Albino Wallaroos, with photograph. And Nick Redfern isn't celebrating as he and fellow Centre for Fortean Zoology members figured out what happened in a British pond, leading to the deaths of two creatures, out-of-place through no fault of their own, as explained in Lair of the Beasts: A Monstrous Anniversary.
