DVD Review: The Sasquatch Gang
This movie, from the creators of Napoleon Dynamite, has a few relative unknown actors in it playing different roles. Three friends, Gavin (Jeremy Sumpter), Hobie (Hubbel Palmer) and Maynard (Rob Pinkston) live in a place called Deer Cliff Falls, where there are purported Sasquatch sightings taking place. They are bullied by Zerk (Justin Long, Live Free Or Die Hard, Apple Mac commercials) and Shirts (Joey Kern) while doing medieval exercises. The local Sasquatch expert is Dr. Ardimus Snodgrass (Carl Weathers, Rocky and Predator) who is the subject of a videotape which is rented out to people by Gavin on occasion (he runs a VHS rental business out of his home). There are apparent tracks and droppings found on a trail by the kids. There is a bit of irony in that there is a character, the sheriff, named Chillcutt (Jon Gries) who does the investigation into the Sasquatch. Zerk is apparently involved in Demolition Derbies as well with his Pontiac Firebird. Zerk apparently owes a good deal of money on a credit card as well, and is trying to figure out a way to raise money. His idea is to start faking Bigfoot evidence, which could explain the so-called tracks and feces found by the group of boys. A young lady named Sophie (Addie Land) hangs around with the guys and wants to get a boyfriend. She works at a place called Video Vern's where Gavin meets her and rents Clash of The Titans. He suggests he and Sophie watch it together. Gavin shows Sophie his fighting techniques in the park, which sparks a budding romance. Another group of boys, led by a boy named Shane Bagwell (Michael Mitchell) seems to be in the bully department as well, though not as strongly as Zerk, who calls Gavin and his friends nerds and uses the term "What the crap is this?" quite well. I won't give away too much more, but it seems to be more of a comedic look at teenage life than a look at Sasquatch (although that is part of the film, of course). I give it about 4 out of 5 stars.
