Bob Rickard reviews Michael Woodley's book which is, itself, somewhat of a review of Bernard Heuvelmans' 1958 cryptozoological classic In the Wake of the Sea-Serpents. Rickard mentions the books on the subject that followed Heuvelmans' publication, including the Loren Coleman/Patrick Huyghe "field guide" collaboration. Of note is Woodley's addition "of a new methodology" to apply to Heuvelmans' ten categories of the beasts. The Second Kasai Rex Photo! Cryptozoology Online

A photo that appeared in a 1932 edition of the Rhodesian Herald purported to show a Tyrannosaurus rex devouring a dead rhino. A Swedish plantation owner claimed to have snapped that photo, and it was dubbed a hoax long ago. While the 1932 photo showed what was a photo of a lizard super-imposed over the carcass of a rhino, another photo has surfaced showing a more realistic representation of a T-Rex super-imposed onto a rhinoceros photo. This photo, too, is supposed to have been snapped by the Swedish farmer in the Kasai swamp of the Congo. Richard Freeman posts this item with the "new" photo and some comparison clips from motion pictures, assuming the latest photo to surface shows a T-Rex image taken from a motion picture still. Ancestor of the Almasty Found in Siberian Cave? Cryptozoology Online

Recent DNA sequencing of a pinky finger bone found in a Russian cave has stirred up a lot of commentary. Richard Freeman adds to it eloquently with remembrances of an expedition mounted by the Centre for Fortean Zoology in 2008. Freeman was part of the team that headed into the Kabardino-Balkaria portion of Russia's Caucasus Mountains in search of the almasty, also known as Russia's "wildman." Freeman updates the report of the trip undertaken at the invitation of respected Russian scientists who have been studying the almasty presence in the area. Freeman fills you in on the team's exploits while relating many of the electrifying sightings of the almasty. Lindsay Selby notes a story that appeared last month on Jonathan Whitcomb's blog under the heading "Japanese World War II Ship Shelled Pterosaur Caves." Whitcomb explained in his post how an email from someone who lives in the area of Papua, New Guinea, claims Japanese troops, occupying the area during World War II, were attacked by flying creatures the islanders refer to as "kor," a nocturnal flying reptile that Whitcomb's correspondent says was plentiful and a danger to fishermen prior to 1940. The kor referred to appear to match the descriptions natives give of the ropen, also reported to be a flying reptile. Does any record exist of the Japanese navy unleashing its guns to pound caves used by these creatures?
