A resounding review of the newest release from Brad Steiger, a master of the high strangeness book genre, notes the latest Steiger release "doesn't just focus on the cinema version vampires." In other words, there are real practitioners of the dark deeds attributed to fictional vampires, and, along with a look at other real life dabblers into arcane and frightening lifestyles, Steiger explores the psyches of these aberrant people and more. Elsewhere, another book review from another noted author finds Dr. Greg Little exploring the data presented by Brent Raynes in Raynes' new book On the Edge of Reality: Dream Weavers - The Mastering of Time and Space. Raynes has quickly garnered the interest of those who delve into the unexplained, as proven by the fact his first book, Visitors From Hidden Realms, has been chosen as the title and "focal point" of a conference scheduled for November of this year at the Edgar Cayce Society's national headquarters. Dr. Little points out the new book is not a continuation of Visitors From Hidden Realms, adhering more to Raynes' "basic approach to ufology". Key quote: "The book emphasizes shamanistic experiences that appear directly linked to the UFO phenomenon, contactees, and abductions." Is there a connection between the shamans and UFOs?

Catherine Guarnieri gives the historical perspective on what may have been some sort of Bigfoot being in Connecticut. As she points out, the legend of a large, hairy "Wild Man" first cropped up in the claims of Winsted Selectman Riley Smith in 1895. Where the legend goes from there leads to reports of much more recent vintage. Is there still a Bigfoot type creature hanging around Winsted, CT? Elsewhere, Loren Coleman reports Recession Hits Hobbits Hard.

In a trip to the movie theater, Loren Coleman was able to pick up on "an incredible number of synchromystical symbols throughout" the new Sherlock Holmes movie. The Fortean nature of the synchronicities Coleman was able to note during his no-doubt working attendance at the theater lead to more and more coincidences involving the author of the Holmes mysteries, the Freemasons and other oddities. With movie trailer. Meanwhile, there may be some Fortean-ness, including numerology, in what Rick Philips says he has noticed about newscasters and the New Year, as he explains in Will Big Media Usage of 'Twenty-Ten' Diminish 'Two Thousand Twelve' Fever?
Reports from Scotland indicate the rumors over the past several years that the Loch Ness Monster may have gone on to the big lake in the sky have tourism officials worried. Members of the official Loch Ness Monster Fan Club are dismayed over the declining number of Nessie sightings. Only one credible sighting was reported in 2009, but some sonar readings of a large body moving through Loch Ness have been made on several occasions. There's more on recent Nessie sightings in Loch Ness Monster Death Rumours Denied. Elsewhere on the cryptozoology scene, famed cryptozoologist and author Loren Coleman injects a bit of naughty into the "Noughties" with The Top Ten Sexiest Cryptomundo Images of the '00s. With many images.

Some potentially nasty Winter weather is headed to Mississippi...

There is a 90% chance of the white stuff, as well as sleet and freezing rain tonight and tomorrow, so, who knows? Maybe I will find some tracks. If I do, the pics will be posted here. Even if I DON'T find any tracks, I will at least publish some pics of the pretty snow (which will probably stick around for a few days, since the temperatures won't reach far above freezing during that period). Stay tuned to this blog for further Mississippi Winter 2010 weather information.

Bogus Bigfoot Match?

Mystery Animals of the British Isles: The Western Isles, by Glen Vaudrey, is the third volume from Britain's CFZ Press in a series that is proving to be an ambitious and well-received venture. The project is under the aegis of the Centre for Fortean Zoology, overseen by the rollicking Jon Downes, and its aim is to produce a book on the mysterious creatures of "each and every one of the counties of the British Isles." Here Nick Redfern, no stranger to publication of books about weird animals, undertakes the pleasurable job of reviewing Vaudrey's book. Redfern notes Vaudrey directs his reports to the strange beasts reported from the "island-chains" off Scotland's northwest coast. What gruesome creatures have graced the reports of the villagers and seamen off the coast of Scotland?

Loren Coleman lists 15 lists. That's right, but these aren't just any lists; they're lists that are of interest to cryptoozoology. Elsewhere, Coleman goes searching for information about an out-of-place animal that made the news, briefly, in 2009, as reported in What Became of Ohio Zebra?

Upcoming Episodes

1/10/2010 6:00 PM - Jeff Wamsley/ The Mothman Lives

Loren Coleman presents a new video from YouTube that purports to show a cryptid creature crouching on a limb in the Maine woods. What's real and what's fake about this bit of new cryptid lore? The video may be an example of what cryptid researchers will have to suffer through in the New Year, and Coleman has some examples of what such serious researchers had to suffer through during the year just ended in Top Ten Worst Bigfoot Stories of 2009. Meanwhile, Coleman adds some notes to Gary Campbell's revelations in Top Ten Nessie Stories for 2009 (with images) and presents a fine compendium of publishing's Top Ten Cryptozoology Books of 2009, with cover art.
