An Editorial by Sean Forker

On September 16, 2007, a game camera located in the forests of Northwest Pennsylvania snapped photos

that has sparked the Media into frenzy.

These photos first became public in late October on the website belonging to the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization; and organization who in itself the last few years have been at the very center of controversy. The following is the actual BFRO recount.

From the BFRO website:

“The three images at the top of the page were obtained with a Bushnell trail camera in Northwest Pennsylvania on the evening of September 16, 2007 by R. Jacobs.

Jacobs had placed the motion-sensing camera on a tree along a game trail in a remote forest area in order to photograph any deer that might be using the trail. He did this in preparation for the Fall deer hunt. Jacobs was not trying to obtain images of a bigfoot/sasquatch.

The area in the foreground was baited with a deer attractant mix and a mineral lick block. In the first image (the one with the bear cubs) the mineral lick block can be seen sitting on a large black plastic plate. One of the bear cubs is apparently licking or sniffing the mineral block. In the two subsequent images the black plate is turned over and leaning against the mineral block.

Several minutes elapsed between the image of the bear cubs and the images showing the ape-like animal (see the time stamps in the lower right corner of the images).

The second image shows the ape-like animal from a rear-side angle, with its head obscured by its shoulders. In the third image the ape-like animal appears to smell the ground near where the deer attractant mix had been scattered.

Various anatomical elements can be seen upon careful examination of the images, including a bare spot in the fur under the arm. More details, data, and related images will be added to this page in coming days.

Various primate experts and bear experts in the US and Canada are currently examining these photos. The ones who have offered initial impressions to the BFRO say the latter two images do not show a bear, but rather a primate.

These recent images from Pennsylvania are very significant to bigfoot research. They likely show a young juvenile bigfoot (smaller than ~5 feet tall), as they have been described by eyewitnesses over the years. Young juvenile bigfoot are typically described as quadrupedal (walking on four legs), with the ability to climb trees or run very quickly on all fours (See the New York Baby Footage). They are sometimes seen alternating between a quadrupedal posture and an awkward bipedal posture. Whereas the larger bigfoot (5 feet tall and above) are almost never described as walking or running on all fours.

It was thought for a long time that any legitimate images of an adult bigfoot would likely be dismissed by the public as showing a human in a costume due to the bipedal posture of adult bigfoot, which is so reminiscent of a human posture. In the case of a young juvenile (quadrupedal) bigfoot, by contrast, the scientific debate would not revolve around whether the figure could be a man in a costume. Rather, the debate would revolve around what type of animal it is ... an entirely different debate.

The BFRO has the privilege of informally naming the apelike-figure captured in these photos. It will be referred to as the "Jacobs creature" (like the "Patterson creature").

Formal, scientific, taxonomic classification, usually cannot be derived from photographs alone, but can be tentatively suggested.

Over the years we have heard of other decent photographs of these animals, in other parts of the country, which have never been released to the public, for various reasons.”

I have no problem with the BFRO toting the suggestion that perhaps these photos may represent a young sasquatch. My problem is the lack of details given to the public after the posting of these photos to the website.

If you possessed such photographic evidence, would you not also be willing to share any supporting evidence?

Listed below are my personal issues with this situation.

1. Upon posting the photographs and subsequently after, no measurements such as height and width of the tree, the posted game camera height, and the distance from the camera to the tree have been given. How can measurements of this “creature” be made if we have nothing to compare it to? We can only estimate which still leaves a large margin of error.

2. Jerry Feaser, the spokesman for the PA Game Commission, stated: “This strange looking animal in the Jacobs photos is "definitely" a "skinny mangy bear."” This statement was posted on the BFRO website, under the Jacobs Photo page, in a text box titled ‘DEBUNKING THE PENNSYLVANIA GAME COMMISSION’. From there they go on to derail the PGC’s credibility due to its cover ups of Mountain Lions in PA. This is the only place on the webpage where an official source citing the subject from the photos as bears is listed. By insinuating past discretions of the PGC they hope to invalidate their stance on the photos.

3. Who has more to lose? The BFRO has again put their reputation on the line by making claims that they cannot validate without possessing necessary evidence; or by withholding key information pertaining to supporting evidence.

A Copyright has been registered for these photographs, and licensing deal can be made by emailing THROUGH a BFRO.net email address. Exactly who is receiving monetary gain from these licensing deals? So by debunking these photographs – the BFRO not only takes a financial loss – registering a copyright is not free (http://www.copyright.gov/docs/fees.html), the loss of licensing agreements (a possible major loss of revenue), but also another smack to the face of the organization. That leads to the question of how many times are they willing to sacrifice their public image as “The Scientific Research Organization Exploring the Bigfoot/ Sasquatch Mystery”.

Since the debut of these photographs, I maintained my objectivity, and waited for the evidence. My associate researchers and I have waited for the supporting evidence, even contacted the BFRO offering assistance. It has obviously fallen on deaf ears. The offers are still there.

On numerous editions of “The Sasquatch Experience”, I stated that we should remain objective and wait. It’s been three weeks and no supporting evidence has come to light. I doubt anything new will show light, and if it does… the damage is done. How can we recover as a legitimate field of research if we continually make these mistakes?

More importantly, how can we help the BFRO recover? As many faults as the great organization has, it still has many researchers who are true to the case. Some of who I call friends. Is it fair to let one of the most recognized organizations flounder because of some “PR” problems? I don’t think so. What we should do is send a message. A message that clearly states that as a community we can no longer afford to have these blunders. A message that thanks them for their continuing service and research – but firm in the fact these PR stunts are intolerable.

“The Jacobs Photos” are just the latest focus. We can all go back to Sonoma, Manitoba, Tennessee, etc. How many times will we fall on shoddy photos and video? Bottom line: Take nothing at face value unless you have the supporting evidence to help further your cause. Sometimes, it’s best to leave some things in the closet.

Those are my final words on this, and the last time I will comment publicly on the matter. My Best of luck to the BFRO and their endeavors, and hopefully we will find some evidence that some day may unite us.

Review: Beyond The Edge Radio 11-09-07

This was a wonderful show, with Pennsylvania paranormal investigators Patty Wilson and Scott Crownover discussing different spirit cases they have investigated, as well as delving into Cryptozoology, including a large, 7 to 8 foot tall grey and hairless creature. Many questions were asked about anomalous things, including about ghosts and whether or not perhaps black mold might contribute to hallucinations in older homes of ghosts. That was actually my question, and I won a copy of Patty's book Where Dead Men Walk as a result. There was also the usual horror movie reviews at the beginning of the show by Scott Hackenslash of the new animated feature Beowulf and also the new 8 Films To Die For festival coming up. It was a wonderful show, and Beyond The Edge Radio keeps getting better and better every single week. Editorial: Is there finally DNA evidence for Sasquatch now available?

On the second episode of the Doug Hajicek-produced series Monsterquest which aired on Wednesday, November 7th, 2007, Drs. Jeff Meldrum and Curt Nelson took a journey to a remote cabin at Snow Grove Lake 250 miles north of the capital of Ottawa, Canada, after hearing of strange activity there which involved a possible Sasquatch. They camped out in the area hoping for their own encounter, but they also found something interesting-apparently, some previous renters of the cabin had set out a board which had screws driven into it and put on the doorstep of the cabin, and the screws and board had hairs, blood and tissue samples embedded in them where something (apparently a Sasquatch) had stepped on the board. The samples were scraped off and taken back to the U.S. and examined by DNA experts and found to have mostly human genomes in them, except for 1 nucleotide which apparently matched chimpanzee genomes. So what we have is a DNA sample which appears to not match any known land mammals anywhere in North America, but, is it absolute proof of Sasquatch, the elusive proof that we have been waiting for for nearly half a century? Or will a body still be required? The results of this DNA test are pretty much preliminary right now, and more advanced test results may be as far as a year away, so I would caution the Bigfoot community not to count its chickens before they hatch and absolutely declare this DNA to be of a Sasquatch (although it does look promising at this point in time, for certain). I am hopeful that this DNA sample will be the absolute proof required to finally prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that Sasquatch exists, but I still feel that a body will be required, and I am no-kill in my stance. I will hold out a slight bit of hope that this is the proof we have been searching for, but at the same time I will be cautiously optimistic.

You Decided!

Review: The XZone 11/08-09/07

This was pretty cool, with me calling in during Kal Korff's segment (apparently Dr. Matthew Johnson was a no-show) and discussing Bigfoot and a little bit about the P/G Movie. I basically said that no matter the truth of the film that we should put the film behind us and concentrate on the current evidence and sort through all the reports and make sure we do not put hoax reports or misidentification or wishful thinking reports in our databases. I made mention of the Monsterquest episode in which the DNA was collected from the screwboard as well. Rob and Kal really make me feel accepted, and I deeply appreciate both men and their hospitality. Thanks, guys.

This was a wonderful show, with guests Diane Stocking and Bobbie Short, who discussed such subjects as their research, the Monsterquest show in which DNA was obtained from the screwboard (see my review of the special below for further details), as well as their opinions on various anomalies in the Bigfoot field, including the Jacobs photos (which Don agrees should be put away once and for all) and a host of other topics. Several questions were fielded from the chatroom as well as e-mail, and Bobbie asked me my impressions of the Monsterquest show as well. It was a tremendous show, and I enjoyed it. Don is being rather tight-lipped about his guest next week, but has promised a great guest for next week, 9:00 EST/8:00 Central, which can be found at the link to the right. Review: Monsterquest 11-07-07

This show focused on the Canadian Sasquatch, more particularly a series of strange attacks on a cabin at Snow Grove Lake in Ontario, Canada, 250 miles north of Ottawa which have occurred for several years. The inhabitants of that cabin set out a screwboard which something stepped on and left a large bloody footprint of some sort which left blood and tissue which was scraped off the screws and the board by visiting Dr. Jeff Meldrum and Dr. Curt Nelson from the University of Minnesota. Several people who have used the cabin are also interviewed about their experiences (no actual sightings, but some encounters with something destroying the cabin from the outside and in). Video of the aftermath of one attack is shown and examined by bear expert Dr. Lynn Rogers, who does not believe it was done by a bear. Thomas Steenburg is also interviewed about his research and impressions of different sightings in the Great White North. John Green is brought in to discuss the Albert Ostman story, which is re-enacted for the first time in ANY documentary that I am aware of, with narration from a recording of Ostman overlaying the re-enactment. Close to the end, the DNA tests are done on the blood and tissue samples by several DNA scientists including Dr. Nelson and some very interesting results are found. All in all, it was one of the better programs on the subject of hairy bipeds I have seen in quite a while, and so far this series gets a 4.8 out of 5 stars. Next Wednesday night Monsterquest examines the elusive Giant Squid, at 10:00 EST/9:00 Central on the History Channel. Check your local listings for time and channel.

The Fouke Monster is Passionate about the Environment

Posted by: Craig Woolheater on November 7th, 2007

The report of a “big-foot-type monster” terrorizing a rural home outside of Fouke spawned the documentary-style film by South Arkansas native Charles Pierce in the early 1970s. The film assured a place in folklore history for the Bigfoot look-a-like, which has allegedly been seen in and around Fouke since the 1940s. The low budget, campy movie earned cult status and the familiarity of this tale and the regular resurgence in the media of yeti, Bigfoot, and caveman-like characters keep the legend alive.

Editorial: Last Word on the Jacobs Photos

About two weeks ago, I wrote an editorial about the Jacobs photos from Pennsylvania which show some kind of object which appears to some to be a primate, although some have said it is a sick bear with mange. The latter is the direction I lean in, but it seems like these photos inspired a lot of debate not only within the Bigfoot community, but also in all the major news outlets, including the AP, Yahoo! News, Fox News, MSNBC (Keith Olbermann even made it his number-1 story last Monday night, talking to Bob Kiviat, producer of World's Greatest Hoaxes: Secrets Finally Revealed about the photos) and CNN. Our local newspaper on Halloween last week even put the AP story
in the paper (conveniently on the back page). My point is, why so much hullabaloo over some questionable photos which most Bigfooters and Mr. Jacobs himself are not calling Sasquatch photos to begin with? Why do we have to spend so much time on these trivial photos which will not prove anything one way or the other when we could be out looking for fresh evidence and absolute proof that there are hairy bipeds out there? The only place where these photos are being absolutely called Sasquatch is in a certain well-known organization which already put its foot in its mouth once with a video which turned out to be a hoax, and they are doing it again with these photos before checking out all the facts and taking measurements to approximate exactly how big the tree is in comparison to whatever is captured in the two images. I say that like the Patterson/Gimlin Movie, we put these photos behind us because they will never prove one way or the other that Sasquatch exists, and move on to other more tangible forms of evidence, something which will prove once and for all there are hairy bipeds instead of wasting blog space (or airwave space) rehashing this old story.

Review: Squatch Detective Radio 11-05-07

This was a wonderful show, with Billy Willard and Tom Lancaster telling of experiences they had on the Paris trip, including where apparently something grabbed Billy's leg through his tent and also mimicked him snoring!!! Tom and Billy also told of other happenings on that expedition, including hearing footfalls of what sounded like something heavy and bipedal. They did not find definitive tracks close to their tent, but they found what appeared to be scuff marks and impressions, but not definitive tracks. It was a wonderful show, and Steve was on briefly from the road to give a status report. Again, for next week, there is no defined guest, but I contacted Billy and said I would be glad to do it if they could not find someone. All I could find quickly online about him is:

Joshua Blu Buhs is an independent scholar living in California. He received his doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania's History and Sociology of Science Department in 2001. The Fire Ant Wars was his first book. Currently, he is working on a cultural history of the legendary sasquatch. He is married and has a daughter."
