There's news from Sumatra as a crew from the Centre for Fortean Zoology (CFZ) has begun the latest expedition in pursuit of evidence for the manlike Orang Pendek. In more news from the crew, CFZ Director Jonathan Downes offers the tidbits in NEWSFLASH - First News from Sumatra. As the CFZ Sumatra Expedition wends its way into the forest primeval, Nick Redfern checks in with a review of one of the latest editions from the CFZ publishing project, as seen in Lair of the Beasts: Northern Monsters. Meanwhile, there are more reports of Sasquatch-type creatures to be found in The Yeti is Alive, or at Least Discussed at Tashtagol and Lindsay Selby's link to a video and separate news story offered in Bogus Bigfoot. Elsewhere, there are big things underway at Loren Coleman's International Cryptozoology Museum, and reporter David Carkhuff talks with Coleman about the venture in Crypto Collection Ready for Big Move.

Mainstream media has been abuzz of late with tales of humanity's promiscuity being an asset. From Neanderthals to proto-humans, our ancestors exchanged DNA in a manner that strengthened and alleviated evolutionary pressure, according to the latest study. Another driving force for change in human development comes from moving into new environments. One such human adventure is described in the Archaeology News Network report on Aboriginal Australians: The First Explorers. From the supposed African diaspora to the Asian invasion by modern humans, the lineage of the Aborigines traces back 50,000 years. A lock of Aboriginal hair donated to an anthropologist has been sequenced showing absolutely no genetic contributions from modern Europeans. This revelation has a broader impact upon the history of mankind and its global migration. One aspect of the news is in a DNA Study Suggesting Asia Was Settled in Multiple Waves of Migration which compares the DNA of ancients from the Asian mainland with humans living in the relative isolation of Australia and New Guinea.

The summer of 2011 may have been the biggest season of UFO sightings in recent memory. These don't supercede the observations of old which still puzzle scientists to this day. The Professor blows the dust off these records hailing from the glory days between Roswell and the dawn of the Red Menace. Craft of all shapes and sizes from late-model flying cigars to economical skytubs are presented with some fascinating photos predating Photoshop. Further back in the archives is a profile of William Buckland who approached strange phenomena with deserving scientific rigor on topics which would have been swept under the rug. Elsewhere, Government Book Talk tackles the archival subject of Yetis and Extraterrestrials, drawing a skeptical parallel between Roswell and a concurrent government memo that provided guidelines for hunting yeti. It all begs the question of whether things are best hidden in plain sight?

TV crew looks for Bigfoot, aka 'Big Rhody,' in Rhode Island

The crews from Animal Planet's "Finding Bigfoot" have been in West Greenwich, Rhode Island, over the past several days looking for evidence of the many reports of Bigfoot activity in western parts of the state. No word on what evidence, if any, the crew has uncovered. Meanwhile, photos accompany the tale of an anonymous gift to a Chinese zoo that has even the zookeepers puzzled, as explained in No Wonder He Looks Confused: The Mystery Creature that Nobody Can Identify. There are also images with Micah Hanks exposition of the newest additions to Canadian coinage, as seen in Crypto-Economics: Canadian Coins Boast Colorful Cryptid Creatures. Elsewhere, Loren Coleman covers the relationship of an exotic animal incident to cryptid news in 'Roo Attack in Ohio.

The Island Monster Mysterious Universe
Bloodsport lures bloodsuckers in Puerto Rico. Many myths and mysteries surround the chupacabras, like so many bettors at a game, to the point the native "vampire" has inextricably woven itself into Puerto Rico's cultural consciousness. Here Nick Redfern relates an account of birds destined for the cockfighting arena that met a far more gruesome fate. A predator made its way into the chickenhouse, unlocked the cages and drained the blood from the feathered warriors before disappearing into the night. Redfern also recently made his way to northern Oklahoma's Cryptid Fest which turned into a Hunt for Bigfoot with the discovery of tracks and a glimpse of the elusive quarry. If you missed that event, head over to Tyler, Texas, for the 2011 Texas Bigfoot Conference, featuring such luminaries of the field as Dr. Ian Redmond and Dr. Jeff Meldrum, among others. Sasquatch sightings have happened in every state but Hawai'i, but it's still surprising to hear an Ohio woman has announced Bigfoot Lives in my Backyard. In a two part audio interview, the cryptid's hostess divulges the particulars of her encounters over the years. Elsewhere, the prehistory of the landscape and the folklore that surrounds what once ploughed the waters of the glacial Lake Aggasiz - and may still make appearances in the area's remnant lakes - leads Robin of CFZ - Canada to pen Prairie Sea Monsters. Meanwhile, noted cryptozoologist, author, museum proprietor and lecturer Loren Coleman rebuts an unwarranted attack from a blogger who took offense to a recent Coleman posting, as seen in Some "Skeptics" Don't Get It.

Big Cats Still Big Mystery Geelong Advertiser
Long a thorn in the side of mainstream zoologists in Australia and other countries where they are not among the native wildlife, out-of-place or alien big cats persist. Mainstream news sources often treat the reports in a less cavalier fashion than they do other fortean topics, but this latest sighting is actually a feral housecat according to experts quoted in Another Cat in September Action. Elsewhere, Unexplained Mysteries presents the video of a Dave Archer Interview on Orang Pendek he sighted back in 2009 on the Centre for Fortean Zoology expedition, and, at Mania, Nick Redfern reveals a tale of possible Littlefield, TX, local lore in Lair of the Beasts: Texan Monsters. Also, Loren Coleman at Cryptomundo is announcing the Grand Monster Reopening of International Cryptozoology Museum on October 30th, the day before Halloween.

In search for Yeti

Bigfoot Living In My Backyard Claims Ohio Woman

A couple of puzzling photographs and a sighting set the stage for the latest Loch Ness Monster evidence that appeared in the Scottish edition of the Daily Mail for September 15, 2011. It appears an alert pleasure boat captain awaiting passengers on Loch Ness was able to capture an intriguing sonar image of one of the world's best known cryptids. Another example of evidence showing unknown monstrous forms cruise the deeps can be found in Glen Vaudrey's report of the Stronsay Beast from 1808, detailed in Bring Me the Head of... Closer to home, but still focussing on mysterious creatures from beneath the foam, Photo: Pink Dolphin on Big Lake demonstrates how pictures are worth a thousand words, or two thousand when featuring such a cute creature. Elsewhere, in Mid-Century Mania: Why Did Yeti-Slick Document Story Go Viral?, Loren Coleman notes the internet is abuzz over recently leaked documents detailing American efforts to capture a live yeti. Was an eccentric millionaire hunting the elusive man beast or was it a ruse to cover up Cold War intelligence operations on Red China's doorstep? The true story at the interstices of these conflicting tales suggests something far weirder. And Cryptomundo also points out that the Slick Papers Have Been Donated to the University of Texas. Seventy five boxes full of papers relating to Indian gurus, yeti, and animal husbandry which occupied the life of the eccentric visionary now make their home at the San Antonio campus.

2011 Texas Bigfoot Conference coming up in Tyler
Scepticism, Old and New Magonia Review of Books
Peter Rogerson reviews two books that present skeptical examination of effects that could be the product of outside influences on the human brain. The first of these books is by well known skeptic Michael Shermer, The Believing Brain: From Ghosts and Gods to Politics and Conspiracies. How We Construct Beliefs as Truths, published this year. The second is the work of German researcher Edmund Parish, first printed in 1897, Hallucinations and Illusions: A Study of the Fallacies of Perception. The Parish reprint is noted for its inclusion of material from the British Society of Psychical Research, along with studies conducted by William James in the U. S. and Munich's Von Schrenk-Notzing in Germany; and the Shermer book is noted for what it reveals about Shermer, himself. Meanwhile, Andrew May reviews the famous poem of Samuel Taylor Coleridge that defied the popular genres of 1798 when it was written and continues to evoke Lovecraftian images today, as set forth in The Ancient Mariner.

From today's maverick science news: Recent tales of "zombie" insects controlled by a variety of different parasites have been expanded to include the woes of the Gypsy Moth caterpillar that succumbs to the hormonal manipulations of a virus that makes the wooly creatures climb to the treetops, anchor themselves, die and liquefy, raining infection down on their previously uninfected brothers and sisters. Elsewhere, Thunderbolts.info sports a new website platform as Stephen Smith points to scarring on an asteroid that should have torn the small object apart, but didn't, giving a more likely origin for the asteroid's physical appearance in Goddess of the Hearth.

Crows and Yowies The Herald
Seeing is believing, but is it enough for proof? A tale of two enterprising birds taking advantage of a cat where one distracts the cat while the other nabs a bite of meat is easily believed because of its mundane nature and someone observed their shenanigans. But why is it so difficult to accept an eyewitness account of coming face to face with a yowie? Elsewhere in the field of maverick science, Australian Geographic notes that Birds of a Feather Talk Together, relating tales of domesticated birds teaching wild birds to speak English. Wrapping up this roundup is Cryptomundo's rumination upon the Caddy Carcass Comportment and the upcoming display of a full-scale model at the new digs for the International Cryptozoology Museum.

Once again Nessie has reared her heads from 'neath the cold waves of her eponymous loch. Jon Rowe of Lewiston was lucky enough to capture her on film while photographing an early morning rainbow. But does the New Nessie Photo, in fact, show two black throated diver birds? North of the border, MetroNews deems Banff-area Bigfoot reports 'credible'. Todd Standing of Sylvanic is quoted as saying, "Some of the sightings are four years old ... to go through them all would be a lifetime’s work."

Stolen Bigfoot costumes are the reason your local newspaper has a crime blotter

Residents along the eastern coast of the Iberian peninsula near Orihuela reported seeing a huge snake in 1970. Reliable witnesses described it as being three and a half meters long with a head the size of a child's. After several fruitless days, the search for the monster snake was called off and the story was heaped upon the slushpile of history. Phantoms and Monters reports that elsewhere in Europe the game is afoot for hunting down the wily Alp in Austria. It's described as a giant bat with elongated limbs, demonically vampiric bearing, and humanoid features that brings nightmares to slumbering folk. Experts propose the Alp is a subspecies of flying fox, which is long-lived and few in number. Has the famous Chinese wild man been caught on film? Cryptomundo links to possible footage, in Cantonese, of the beast. But an astute, Cantonese-speaking reader notes the footage was from the USA. In lighter but equally confusing news, io9 reports that someone stole a Bigfoot costume along with copper tubing from a home in Colorado, in Stolen Bigfoot costumes are the reason your local newspaper has a crime blotter. Why would someone want to steal a Bigfoot costume?

Canada's unofficial legendary beast is best known among First Nation storytellers as a cautionary spirit manifesting the vices of greed and gluttony, hunting down those worthy of joining its ranks. Even if it must possesses its victim to perpetuate horrors in the remotest corners of the countryside, there would be no end to tales of gaunt, gray homonids leaving scarlet trails in the midnight snow. Encounters are few and far between, and no wonder considering their malevolent nature. Should we be protecting the wendigo or should we be protecting ourselves from it? Elsewhere, in A Newly-Published Review, the Journal of Scientific Exploration gives high praise to Karl Shuker's recent book, Alien Zoo.

In this corner, looming seven feet tall and tipping the scales at 320 pounds, is former World Heavyweight Champion Nikolai Valuev. His opponent, hailing from the Shoriya Mountains and making a name for himself since 2005 in remotest Siberia, is a full head taller and considerably heavier, the Russian Yeti! The big palooka has a decidedly fortean outlook: "I'll draw my own conclusions once I've been there," while the Yeti remarks "Am I afraid of Nikolai Valuev? Of course not, I'd be pleased to speak with him - without witnesses." No word if there will be any confusion telling one from the other during the expedition. Closer to home, Fred Andrews tells Reuters of A Southern-Fried Version of Bigfoot. While producing his film Creature, Andrews found himself unearthing the rich history of the bayou as it relates to things that go bloop in the swamp. He details the Letiche, the Honey Island Swamp Monster, along with zombies and werewolves. In a similar vein the delightful Dr. Beachcombing discusses at length Eighteenth-Century Scandinavian Merfolk, called "sea-apes" in bygone times, sharing accounts that may be our nautical nieces and nephews or wayward manatees. Cryptomundo provides more information regarding the Kandahar Cougar with photographic evidence casting doubt on their identification ascaracals.

Loren Coleman shares his thoughts on showman P.T. Barnum and his contributions to the field of cryptozoology. More than little people, fat ladies, and dog-faced boys, Barnum set an example of promotion that brings strangeness into the public consciousness. He redefined museums from stuffy rooms with unctuous audiences wearing monocles to a place of discovery and wonder. The International Museum of Cryptozoology Musem in Maine attempts to maintain that spirit by spreading knowledge of hidden beasts and living fossils. Coleman also participated as a judge in io9's contest for best photographic evidence of a cryptid. Hold onto your hats because "We Found A Cryptid! Meet The White Cheetah." Among the runners up are leeches in disguise and a pibald wallaby--along with anecdotes from the competition and the tools on hand to prevent chicanery. Reptoids And Dinosauroids Frontiers of Zoology
Is Earth being visited by our dinosaur forebears in the guise of aliens? Reptilian aliens are a mainstay of UFOlogy with the likes of Riley Martin toDavid Icke revealing their true natures and motives. Ancient cultures from six continents have woven these saurians into their heritage as deities, friends, and neighbors. Frontiers of Zoology challenges the final frontier in a detailed article telling of Dragon-Gods, modern day encounters with lizardmen, and the reimagining of troodons which bear an eerie resemblance to the Greys. More down to Earth is a report from Cryptozoology Online: Giant Crocodile, Captured Alive Has Potential To Be A Supergiant. Over 21 feet in length, this beast has the potential to grow even larger in size and notoriety.

Mules, ligers and jumars... say what? History remains strange but is summarily dismissed by Karl Shuker who focuses on the improbable Horse-Cow mutt known as the jumar since the mid-16th century, while casting doubt upon the chimerical cryptid known as a cuino, long celebrated as a heretical hybrid between a pig and a sheep. He goes on to reveal three breeds of pig that may be the masterminds behind the perpetuation of cuinos in farmyard fables. Elsewhere, Loren Coleman announces The Relict Homonid Inquiry, a new scholarly journal addressing our extant cousins with essays, news briefs, and correspondence in addition to seeking submissions from objective, reputable scholars in the field. And theLongview News-Journal publicizes the upcoming 2011 Texas Bigfoot Conference in Tyler, Texas on October 1st.

Bigfoot Utah video breakdown part 2.

While target shooting in the mountains of Utah, some men who had gone fishing notice something moving in the trees. Two cameras are rolling and capture what might be a Bigfoot walking away. Later a kind of "hut" is found not far from camp. But some commenters on Cryptomundo seem to think that it's a man in a very thick jacket, a survivalist or hunter, which would also explain the tent-like structure that was found. And from Colorado, yet another Bigfoot Caught on Video in San Juan Mountains. Much smaller, far less hairy "creatures" are causing panic in Sri Lanka, whereGrease Devils Riot Kills Police and another officer and five other people are hurt as residents gave chase to one. A map of "sightings is shown. The wave of sightings of “Grease Devils" is similar to the past encounters with Indian “Monkey-Men.” A much different creature, this one with Emerald Isle roots, is described in Digging Up The Dearg-Daol. What is the origin of this vampire-like demon that's said to be the most dreaded creature in Irish folklore?

DVD Review: Yetis, Sasquatch and Hairy Giants with David Hatcher Childress

This DVD presents a talk given by David Hatcher Childress at the Ancient Mysteries Conference in Arizona, and it's pretty darned good. It is essentially the video form of Childress' book, with a terrific slideshow of photos which are in the book, as well as video clips from such movies as The Abominable Snowman of the Himalayas. It also goes into Giants throughout history, along with factoids about different events such as the Patterson/Gimlin Film, the Minnesota Iceman incident and other events in the history of Bigfoot. I do recommend getting this DVD. 4 1/2 out of 5 stars.

Alistair Baxter, a Nessie hunter, found more than he bargained for one summer evening in 1968 after coming face to face with an ethereal ball of light with soporific qualities. The next morning a trio of mysterious agents debriefed him, leaving with a curious smirk and the ominous statement "We might return." For the next three nights of his lake monster expedition, Baxter was troubled with dreams of Bigfoot as the herald of apocalypse. Armageddon, conspiracy, cryptozoology, oneiric omens, and ufology upon the shores of Earth's weirdest lake relate a suggestive story of interconnectedness that would do Charles Fort proud.

New Expedition to Sumatra The Paranomalist
The Center for Fortean Zoology has organized another expedition to Sumatra in search of this short, powerful, bipedal hominoid unrecognized by science. The expedition leaves on September 9th and is led by Adam Davies, the author of Extreme Expeditions. Two teams are being deployed to maximize their chances of finding evidence of the creature; the second team will be led by Dr. Chris Clark, and will include Rebecca Lang and Mike Williams of CFZ Australia. While this expeditions will be following Sumatran regulations, back in 1959 the Nepalise government set forth regulations concerning any mountaineer's interactions with another mystery hominoid, the Yeti, as described in American Diplomatic Memo Outlined Rules For Yeti Hunting in Nepal.

Satori has many different definitions in Japanese. One is "understanding." Other etymologists dare to posit the term is a transliteration of "satyr," being a telepathic creature assuming different forms of an ape, dear, or goat-man from whom the best defense is maintaining an empty mind. Forteana goes on to relate an anecdote of a woodcutter's encounter with such a beast raising a controversy: is the beast an actual cryptid or a lesson in Zazen? Half a world away upon the island that bore another great empire, Big Cats in British Files provides a lesson in the A,B,C's of alien big cats. Panthers hiding in pubs, leopards lurking behind lorries, and other ravenous felines emerging from the shadows of legend into the mainstream with more public offices acknowledging their existence.
