The Saint who Became a Cat Beachcombing's Bizarre History Blog
In the rather unusual category of saints-who-turn-into-animals, we have St. Agatha, a martyr saint from Catania, Sicily, whose followers stretch from up the Atlantic coast all the way to the UK. In the south of France there is a legend that the saint would appear in the guise of a cat to women who had the impertinence to weave or wash on her day--5 February. (By the way, the saint's breasts, which were removed by Roman torturers, can apparently be found in relic collections at Palermo and St Trophime.) Still more feline follies in Viking and Pirate Black Cats, which tells of the belief that the Vikings, after they ransacked and pillaged a village, would leave a black cat behind. Is this where the notion of black cats being unlucky creatures comes from?

Large Cryptid Snakes Phantoms & Monsters
Are there giant snakes in the San Juan River in the Four Corners area of southeastern Utah? Sightings in 2005 and 2007 suggest there are. In a video, J.C. Johnson of Crypto Four Corners describes one that made its way from the river onto the bank and reared itself up to the back bumper of his truck. The serpent had a diameter of a 10"-12" and was dark in color. There are no indigenous snake species in the Four Corners area that match any of the sightings. Elsewhere, we all know about the Sasquatch of North America, the Chinese Yeren, Australia’s Yowie, and Russia’s Almasty, but are flesh-and-blood man-beasts running around the woods of Britain? Nick Redfern suggest they do in Beware of the British Bigfoot. Then Neil Arnold digs through some old newspaper archives and uncovers anEncounter With The Jabberwocky Of Maryland, which is described as being similar to a small dragon, with the body of a deer, the head of a horse and small leathery wings. Then in Deep Sea Gigantism, Micah Hanks touches on some curious cases of mystery giant eels, while David Attenborough talks about the time when he and Sir Peter Scott were exploring the existence of the Loch Ness Monster in a video presentation called David Attenborough's Life Stories - Series 2. Finally in the things-that-don't-move-but-seem-to-get-around category, Loren Coleman examines the issue of out-of-place plants in New York in Cryptobotany: NY’s Relict Aquatic Tree Species.
