Review: Monsterquest 10-8-08

This episode was a follow-up to last season's Giant Squid episode, called Giant Squid Ambush, which focuses on a piece of video of a giant squid taken in 2006 in the Sea of Cortez, off the coast of Mexico. Local witnesses were interviewed about their sightings of a giant squid measuring upwards of 100 feet. Doug Hajicek discusses the camera that was used to film the squid. Roger Hanlon, a marine biologist examines the footage, but is unable to determine the species. But, video analysis expert in engineering Peter Schmitz examines it and says it is 60 feet in length. Dr. Clyde Roper says it is not possible for a giant squid to exist, at least not a giant Humboldt Squid. In the follow-up, a team goes to Loreto Bay, once again in the sea of Cortez, to attempt to film another giant Humboldt Squid. Apparently, utilizing laser technology, there is an attempt to use that to draw in a giant squid to film it. Dale Pearson, who was part of the original team in 2006, joins this expedition in search of the giant Humboldt Squid, as do other divers. A story from World War II arises where allegedly a team of German soldiers is attacked in a lifeboat and one is dragged under. A new harness is designed which is to help with withstanding abrasions and abuse underwater when dealing with the giant Squids. The team goes under, and finds...well, watch it to see for yourself. The next new episode airs October 22, 9:00 EST/8:00 Central on the History Channel, focusing on Monster Spiders. Check local listings for time and channel.
Philip Mantle, editor of UFO Data Magazine, is set to reveal definitive proof that UFOs landed in Roswell in 1947. What did he find in the deserts of New Mexico and what will it mean for us? Remember, however, that Mantle was a long-time proponent of the "alien autopsy" film, which was eventually shown to be a hoax.
Two hunters in Elk County first witness a pair of dim glowing lights, followed by 10 white beams of light coming from one spot about 10 feet above the ground, then a lime-green glowing human-like form moving about 20 feet out into a grass field. Its arms hung straight down and were longer than a human's arms. It moved faster than the hunters, as if it were gliding. This incident took place amid ongoing UFO reports across Pennsylvania in recent weeks and months.

MonsterQuest : Giant Squid Ambush Airs on Wednesday October 08 09:00 PM EST/8:00 Central

Does a monster of gigantic proportions thrive one thousand feet under the ocean's surface in the Sea of Cortez? Watch video evidence captured in 2006 by our expedition team of what appears to be a giant squid. Although the footage is less than two seconds long, and difficult to analyze, some experts believe that the squid can be as large as one hundred feet in length. Return to the area with our team, equipped with improved technology, to find proof of this legendary sea beast.

Reviews: Bigfoot Central/Bigfoot Quest 10-7-08

Bigfoot Central was actually pretty great, with M.K. and Don on expedition in an undisclosed location, and there was not a great deal of focus on the P/G Movie (thankfully). They answered listener e-mails, and also discussed a project where M.K. is working with footprints and determining what is and what isn't a track, which he will put together as a project for a future show. He and Don also discussed their research in the west. Dunno what M.K. and Don have planned for next week, but it begins at 8:00 EST/7:00 Central.

On Bigfoot Quest the lovely twins from Florida, Diane Stocking and Donna Cohrs, who discussed their research in the Sunshine State, as well as their future plans (Diane is going to Oregon to camp out for three months). I called in with Bill Green, and we asked Diane and Donna some interesting questions. Laurie Phillips also called in, mainly to hear the show, but she also asked some good questions of the two sisters. Dunno what Bob and Mike have planned for next week, but it begins at 9:00 EST/8:00 Central. And as always, we encourage you to please tune in and support great research.

This was a pretty great show, with guest Dan from Florida, who discussed his research, as well as his sightings and encounters and his wife's. He also went into research that he has done in Florida, mainly Central and Northern Florida. I called in and asked him some questions, which he answered pretty well, such as about sightings near my birthplace of Jacksonville, and also the correlation of 3-toed or 5-toed tracks (he says he has found only 5-toed). Next week, Billy and DB welcome Craig Woolheater and Monica Rawlins from the Texas Bigfoot Research Conservancy to discuss the upcoming Texas Bigfoot Conference. Dr. Jeff Meldrum
Dr. Jeff Meldrum

Born in 1958, Dr. D. Jeffrey Meldrum is currently an associate professor of anatomy and anthropology at Idaho State University and an affiliate curator of vertebrate palaeontology at the Idaho Museum of Natural History.

Through his work in the field of physical anthropology and his specialization in foot mechanics, Meldrum has studied the implications for bipedal adaptation and locomotion in early hominids. He has also participated in palaeontological field projects to South America, collecting new fossil primate specimens from the Miocene of Columbia and Argentina.

Meldrum is best known for his open-minded yet scientific approach to the bigfoot phenomenon. Because he grew up in the Pacific Northwest, Meldrum was no stranger to the subject, having heard sasquatch stories from an early age. His interest in the legendary creature took a back burner as he continued his formal education and teaching until 1996, when he found and cast a series of fresh sasquatch prints in Washington and, the following year, northern California. Meldrum has since gathered and purchased collections of purported track casts as part of his research into sasquatch foot anatomy, and his lab now houses what may be the world's most extensive collection of sasquatch track casts. Meldrum is widely considered the leading expert on sasquatch footprints as well as the derived morphology and functional anatomy of the foot.

Starting in the late 1990’s, Meldrum has frequently appeared, often with J. Richard Greenwell, in documentaries discussing his insights into amateur videotapes allegedly showing the creatures known as bigfoot and Yeti, in addition to sharing his research pertaining to derived foot anatomy and locomotion. He has spoken at many sasquatch conferences and symposia, including the Willow Creek International Bigfoot Symposium in 2003 and the "Bigfoot in Texas?" museum and speaker series sponsored by the University of Texas and the Institute of Texan Culture in 2006.

Meldrum received his B.S. in zoology specializing in vertebrate locomotion at Brigham Young University in 1982, his M.S. at BYU in 1984 and a Ph.D. in anatomical sciences, with an emphasis in biological anthropology, from State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1989. He held the position of postdoctoral visiting assistant professor at Duke University Medical Center from 1989 to 1991. Meldrum worked at Northwestern University's Department of Cell, Molecular and Structural Biology for a short while in 1993 before joining the faculty of Idaho State University where he currently teaches.

Meldrum received his B.S. in zoology specializing in vertebrate locomotion at Brigham Young University (BYU) in 1982, his M.S. at BYU in 1984 and a Ph.D. in anatomical sciences, with an emphasis in biological anthropology, from State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1989.

Meldrum’s interest in the Sasquatch took off after being shown 15-inch footprints by Paul Freeman, in a plowed field near Walla Walla, Washington. Although initially believing the tracks to be forgeries, upon further examination noticed what he believes is evidence of a high degree of flexibility in the print and a mid-tarsal break, traits he has come to believe belong to Bigfoot. Meldrum has published several academic papers ranging from vertebrate evolutionary morphology, the emergence of bipedal locomotion in modern humans and Sasquatch and is a co-editor of a series of books on paleontology. Meldrum is the author of the 2006 book Sasquatch: Legend Meets Science (ISBN 0-7653-1216-6), a companion volume to the Discovery Channel documentary of the same name.

Reviews: HBM's Crypto-Corner/Bigfoot Mystery/Sasquatch Experience 10-5-08

HBM's was pretty great, with guest Darin Richardson, who discussed his book Bigfoot and I: A Personal Journey Into The World of Sasquatch, as well as his research and interest in the subject. He also talked about his early life, his inspiration for writing his book, his impetus for his radio show and other subjects. Bill Green was brought on briefly to ask Darin a couple of questions. This was the kickoff to Authors' Month and a Half, which continues next week at a special early start time of 4:00 EST/3:00 Central with guest Dr. Jeff Meldrum (Sasquatch: Legend Meets Science).

On The Bigfoot Mystery, Darin and I had Billy Willard on, who told some of his funny stories about his experiences and sightings, especially his humorous experiences with Tom Lancaster, his experience in Texas where something grabbed his leg while he slept in his tent, hearing something mimicing his snoring and some other experiences. Bill Green called in and asked about the d*&n Georgia Hoax and also asked Billy the standard question about new sightings or footprint discoveries. Richie from California also called in and told of some vocalization experiences he has had as well as finding footprints. The BM will return in two weeks on the 19th, at 7:00 EST/6:00 Central.

Finally, on The Sasquatch Experience, Sean and James had guests Craig Woolheater and B.J. Hollars to discuss the East Coast Bigfoot Conference from last weekend, going through and discussing individually the presentations at the Conference. I called in and asked Craig how Operation Forest Vigil was going, as well as wishing him success on the upcoming Texas Bigfoot Conference in two weeks, as well as about the ECBC DVD. Dunno what Sean, James and Melissa have planned for next week, but it begins at 9:00 EST/8:00 Central.

Editorial Redux

Editorial: 50 Years of Bigfoot

(NO, that does not read 50 Years WITH Bigfoot; this is not about the Janice Carter book).

August 1958. Northern California, in Del Norte and Humboldt Counties. A road building crew, contracted by the Wallace brothers (Ray, Roy and Wilbur) and owned by Thomas Sourwine, experiences unusual activity as they attempt to build roads through forest land. Strange and large footprints are found in and around road building sites, as well as camps, and occasionally sightings of large, hairy, manlike creatures are made as well. Catskinner (one who drives a bulldozer) Jerry Crew has seen tracks around his bulldozer for over a month and is very puzzled by these events, and decides to share this with the world, so his friend, taxidermist Bob Titmus encourages him to buy some Plaster of Paris and shows him how to cast with it, and Jerry casts one large 17 1/2-inch track, 7 1/2 inches across the ball of the foot and takes it to the local newspaper, the Humboldt Times, where editor Andrew Genzoli writes up an article about the strange footprint and also displays a photo of Crew holding the cast. The creature needed a name, however, and that name was provided by Rocky Bemis' Mom-Big Foot. The actual headline read "New Sasquatch Found-It's Called Big Foot," and it became a household word. Before this, the creature was known in the Pacific Northwest as Sasquatch, a phrase coined by former teacher J.W. Burns, and know variously as booger, wildman, gorilla, haints and a variety of other names nationwide. Before the name Big Foot came along, the most famous hominid was the Himalayan Mountains-dwelling Abominable Snowman, or Yeti. Of course, there were reports for thousands of years of giant hairy bipeds, including the Ape Canyon, Ostman and William Roe accounts which were all pre-1958, but finally in October of '58, there was a name, a marketable name, to go along with the creatures themselves. Sometime later (not sure when, possibly in the 1970's) the creature's nickname was shortened to Bigfoot, which is all one word and much more recognizable. Of course, the most famous sighting and recording of a Bigfoot is the Patterson/Gimlin Movie, but it is still today in dispute, over 40 years after it was taken. It is in dispute because of a certain Bob Heironimus who claims to have been in the suit. The original 1958 tracks are also in question because of the death of Ray Wallace in late-2002 in which his family "'fessed up" to Ray's hoaxing of tracks in the Bluff Creek area and the media ran with it and believed that Wallace's death destroyed Bigfoot once and for all. Well, maybe the one-two punch of the Wallace "confession" and the allegations from Bob Heironimus regarding the P/G Movie told the general public that Sasquatch is nothing but a myth, but it did NOT destroy the reports or the popularity of America's favorite hairy biped. Bigfoot is seen in many advertisements, such as the popular Jack Link's beef jerky franchise, as well as being used in various commercials such as Cold Stone Creamery Ice Cream Parlor, Ask.com ads, a Canadian courier company and various other advertising campaigns. Bigfoot is seen practically all over TV and the Internet, sometimes in a humorous context, other times in serious scientific studies. Even if the creature itself does not exist (but I know differently, having seen one ten years ago today), it is still a great cultural phenomenon and a truly recognizable icon worldwide. Hail to Bigfoot-50 years and it still remains elusive.
