Bob Rickard, the publisher of the now defunct publishing venture Fortean Tomes, replies to an earlier critique by Loren Coleman and Jerry Clark of Michel Meurger and Claude Gagnon's Lake Monster Traditions. Unlike Coleman and Clark, he does not see it as a pretentious debunking book and goes on to explain how the English edition differs from the original French. And he explains the book's folkloric interpretation of lake monsters: "For Meurger," writes Rickard, "the witness’ imaginative state, at the moment of witnessing or of being startled, was of critical interest, for it was in that moment that perceptions and interpretations of them would be largely shaped by cultural and received imagery."
