Monkey Fossils Suggest Primates Came Out of Asia, Not Africa Wired
We've been told about our Out-of-Africa origins for so long that this news comes as quite a surprise. The discovery of four ancient, lemur-like creatures in Libya suggests that the human family began in the Middle East, according to a paper published in the journal Nature by Christopher Beard, a paleontologist at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, and colleagues. The fossils are 40 million years old, older than any other anthropoid found in Africa, and suggests that the Middle East is the origin of the ur-primate or “Dawn Monkey." In another surprise, one of the largest meteorite impacts in the world has been discovered in the Australian outback. The asteroid that struck 300 million years ago was likely at least 8 miles across and it is believed this Giant crater may have been extinction trigger.
