Recent photos from Brazil, supposedly showing unknown Indians in the rainforest, have been shown to have bent the truth somewhat, although they can't be labeled a hoax, because the Indians in question have never been contacted. That's not the case in an event that rocked the scientific world in 1971 when the discovery of the stone-age Tasaday tribe was announced in the Philippines. Benjamin Radford details the hoax that fooled such prestigious edifices of scientific journalism as National Geographic and led to a highly regarded book.
