An aerial image from Apple maps shows a strange “something” traveling south down Loch Ness. Is it a boat? A processing defect? Or Nessie? Looking back at some historical accounts, Dr. Beachcombing wonders: Was Nessie a Kelpie? in other words, did the kelpie legend of Ness gave birth to the Nessie legend? Or is there a kelpie legend because there was a cryptid in the lake? From long tails, we go to a Short Post on a Tall Tale, where Michael Swords, otherwise known as “The Professor,” answers a query from a reader who asks if he had any files relating to Ivan Sanderson’s investigation of a giant penguin sighting and its three-toed footprints found on Clearwater beaches in Florida in 1948. Yes, indeed, he’s got Sanderson’s three-ringed binder on the case. It just had to be a hoax, right? RIGHT? Well, yes, it was. So what does this say about cryptozoology? What does it say about Sanderson? The Professor parses the issues with aplomb.

The game is afoot in Spike's latest reality TV show, writes Loren Coleman. If you're inclined towards these shows, at least you know to root for Mike and his team as they pursue sasquatches. If you're not yet acquainted with the North American wood ape, meet up with Paul Darin for The Return Of Bigfoot. From the first modern accounts in 1959, to Patty, and the embarassing Melba Ketchum saga, any newb will be well-served boning up on this enduring enigma. Should you only believe in Bigfoot, Micah Hanks explores the Historical Evidence Versus Popular Opinion, uncovering inconvenient complexities that monkeywrench the belief of Bigfoot as a modern urban legend. Micah invokes John Keel's stance on belief, making an interesting synchromystic twist of a latter day Keel citing his mentor, creating the necessity to contemplate The Weirdness Of The Mothman. Hip deep in legend and lore, Nick Redfern is convalescing with a brace of Andy Colvin books, watching The Mothman Prophecies, and catching creepy coincidences between the two.

Bigfoot responds to a call-and-response knocking session in Medford, Oregon, recently, according to this impressive (but hard to hear) video recording released by The Crypto Crew. Meanwhile, a letter to the editor of a local news site from an eyewitness who says, Panthers exist in Louisiana, despite local authorities vehement denial. This witness says he and his wife encountered what they first thought was a black Labrador...until the "dog" began screaming and climbed a tree.

RIP Dr. Roy P. Mackal

Loren Coleman presents a list of the top Crypto news events from the past year, including hits (and misses) from the discovery of the new tapir to Melba Ketchum's controversial DNA study. The Black Dwarf Lowland Tapir has stirred up controversy of its own simply by existing, a fact that is sparking Debate over its discovery. It seems there's a difference of opinion over who discovered the cryptid and when, but as Coleman reminds us, Teddy Roosevelt knew about it over a century ago. And speaking of tapirs, the strange little animals are making the most of their 15 minutes of fame by also apparently impersonating Bigfoot outside of a village in Malaysia.Giant footprints are not that of Bigfoot, says Wildlife Department, but instead were distorted tapir prints found in waterlogged peat soil.

From all indications, it appears that Roy Mackal died three months ago. How could the passing of someone of Mackal’s stature and accomplishments not be widely noted? Loren Coleman provides the first obituary. Mackal was a University of Chicago biochemist, inventor, author, and a founding member of the International Society of Cryptozoology. He also did field research on Nessie at Loch Ness and led two expeditions to the Republic of Congo in search of Mokele-mbembe. Notes Coleman, “He will be remembered with great affection and sincerity by his colleagues and friends for his healthy and enthusiastic optimism as well as his analytical and practical intellect.” People continue to see creatures that aren’t supposed to exist, as in Australia, the Blue Mountains panther spotted again. The latest sightings come on the heels of government report that dismissed the validity of 500 eyewitness statements, saying that ''large dogs, large feral cats or swamp wallabies'' were the likely candidates for reports of the panther-like creature.

Cryptozoologist of the Year 2013: Dr. Bryan Sykes

Scott McMan of Ghost Theory has viewed Dead Bigfoot, the newly released documentary about Justin Smeja and the infamous Sierra Kills case in which Smeja claims that he shot two Bigfoot dead. One of them was a juvenile according to Smeja and the friend who was with him during the 2010 encounter. McMan finds Justin Smeja to be a "stone cold killer" and denounces him as a textbook sociopath. McMan asks the question we have all been wondering since the Sierra Kills story first appeared--Justin Smeja says he just began shooting at the Bigfoot at first sight, which is disturbing enough but it also means he freely fired upon what very well could have been a man in a costume. At that moment, Justin Smeja had no idea if he was seeing a human or a cryptid creature. Why would he shoot at a possibly unarmed man without cause? The Sierra Kills case is a strange one and one that we almost hope is a hoax...In other much more positive cryptozoology news Cryptozoonews announces Dr. Bryan Sykes asCryptozoologist of the Year 2013. Sykes made headlines earlier this year as he revealed his Oxford DNA testing showed Yeti samples were really from a polar bear/grizzly hybrid. Meanwhile, Karl Shuker gleefully puts the cryptid into Christmas with a look at the giant boar called the Gloso which is associated with Sweden's Yuletide celebrations: Pigging out at Christmas-It's Grim with the Gloso.

This is a real head-scratcher. How could Matt Moneymaker of "Finding Bigfoot" challenge the evidence that Bill Mums presents that the Matilda footage shows nothing more that a Chewbacca costume? It’s not the first example we’ve seen of belief trumping evidence. Spike TV is about to give Moneymaker a run for his TV money, as "$10 Million Bigfoot Bounty" Set to Premiere in January. Everyone wants in on the Bigfoot action apparently.Bigfoot Hunters Seek Sasquatch in Oconee Co., about the Carolina Society for Paranormal Research and Investigation, Inc. looking for the source of found footprints 18 inches in length, makes us wonder what a “paranormal” group is doing investigating Bigfoot. No such questions arise about Adam Davies, author of Extreme Expeditions, when he answers a few soft questions about The Life Of A Cryptozoologist: Hunting Monsters. Finally, here is a big Happy Birthday to cryptozoologist Karl Shuker who talks aboutCryptozoology And The Birthday Present That Changed My Life. The present? 29% of Americans, that's who. PS Magazine tells us what we already know--that after numerous hoaxes and fakery, Bigfoot enthusiasts are cautious and careful when it comes to evidence of the cryptid creature and also that "Finding Bigfoot" isn't a very exciting show unless constant yelling and loud whispers of, "DID YOU SEE THAT?!" really pushes your buttons. Meanwhile, Spike TV has admirably put their money where their mouth is, as the saying goes, because their headline grabbing new show,10 Million Dollar Bigfoot bounty premieres Jan 10th. The show is hosted by Dean Cain (who doesn't seem to age) and is staffed by experts who will test the evidence if it's found. It isn't quite clear how the show will work because the description reads as if it's a cross between The Amazing Race and Survivor with evidence of Bigfoot being the sought-after prize. The show's Bigfoot chasers likely will not approach the subject from the angle that Nick Redfern calls the Forbidden Sasquatch strangeness, a fact that Redfern finds very frustrating. The forbidden strangeness he refers to is the possibility that Bigfoot may have unearthly origins and may be connected to UFO sightings, among other types of high-strangeness.

It's been a very quiet week for Bigfoot and his cryptid relatives but never fear, Blobsquatch is here to save the day straight from Lincolnshire. Blobsquatch aka Britfoot was kind enough to appear on video although he forgot to turn off his blur defensive filter off. Our own Chris Savia points out that this sighting was accompanied by the sound of 'banging rocks' which is an interesting detail present in just a handful of sightings here in the US...The Crypto Crew's Dorraine Fisher wonders what exactly it would take to effectively track and locate Bigfoot on an ongoing basis: Bigfoot Undercover What Will It REALLY Take To Find Them? She and her videographer friend Philip Spencer conclude that the only way is to dedicate months, even years to the project and disappear into the deep forest to 'become part of the landscape', in order to assimilate enough to get near Bigfoot. There are few people out there willing much less able to do this sort of thing, but we'd nominate Wilderness expert Les Stroud for the job.

Everyone and their little brother in the Pacific northwest has seen something associated with Bigfoot. Adding another for the pile growing taller than Mt. Rainier, Dana Matthews has a photo from Jeff Stillman showing an astounding print from last week. Piqued? Check in with Dale Drinnon with the skinny on the Mount Rainier Sasquatch. In other crypto news, Greg Taylor has coverage of Richard Freeman's quest to answer the question "Are There Still Tasmanian Tigers Roaming In The Wild?" His CFZ expedition appears to have a body of evidence, but do they have a body?

My Review of the Field Guide to Bigfoot, Yeti and Other Mystery Primates Worldwide by Loren Coleman and Patrick Huyghe

5.0 out of 5 stars Bold, Comprehensive and Worth Reading,December 6, 2013
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Field Guide To Bigfoot, Yeti, & Other Mystery Primates Worldwide (Paperback)
This book takes a bold step forward in the study of hairy hominids (or hominoids if one prefers) in that the two authors, Coleman and Huyghe, propose different classes of these mystery primates, from True Giants (9 feet and taller) to Neo-Giants to Proto-Pygmies to Unknown Pongids to even the controversial Water Apes. The reader travels from North America to Asia to Europe to even Oceania exploring these different creatures and the implications thereof. While the reader may not agree with every type of classification it is still a worthwhile read and a welcome addition to every Cryptozoological bookshelf.

Ya know, even in your most sleepless moments, you can occasionally have moments of clarity.

For about the past two years, one thing about the show Finding Bigfoot has bothered me more than any other-the usage of the plural term "Bigfoots." Why this bothered me so much, I will never know. However, starting today, while I may not use the term myself, I will at least take the George Costanza stance on it (his was on the word "manure," I.E. it's "nure" which is good, with a "ma" in front of it, ergo, it's "foots," which is good, with a "Big" in front of it, so if you think about it, it's really not all that bad). SO I will no longer cringe and allow my teeth to be set on edge every time one of them says "Bigfoots." I will accept it as the lexicon of this crazy world of ours we call Bigfooting.

This Day In Bigfoot History: 60 Years Ago Today...

December 3rd, 1953: Rene Dahinden was working for a dairy farmer in the province of Alberta, Canada, near Calgary. He was having dinner with his boss and they heard a CBC news report about the London Daily Mail newspaper sponsoring a search for the Abominable Snowman, or Yeti. Rene said to his boss, "Wouldn't it be something to go on a search like this?" His boss told him, "Hell, you don't have to go that far. They have something like that in British Columbia." Dahinden described it as someone turning a switch and he was one of the first in that era to really bring about awareness of this large, hairy hominid or hominoid in British Columbia, and he inspired John Green to look into it and John became the main chronicler of the phenomenon. Hats off to that farmer, Dahinden and to John Green for their part in making us aware of these magnificent beings called Bigfoot or Sasquatch.
