From the maverick science news: Israeli archaeologists excavating Qesem cave, discovered in 2000, have found teeth they believe push the origins of modern humans back to 400,000 years ago. Other archaeologists are disputing the claim, and further excavations are underway to find cranial bones the Israelis hope will bolster their contentions. Elsewhere, the perspectives of two very different schools of astronomical thought are explained by Mel Acheson in a look at a "super nova remnant" that draws its name from the decorations of the season, as noted in The Ornament Not Seen. Meanwhile, Stephen Smith explains consensus astrophysics' need for dark matter and dark energy before presenting the Electric Universe position that such mathematical constructs are non-existent and unnecessary in Illuminating Dark Matter Theories. There's also a medical note in the news that may cause you to look askance at your kitchen faucet, as explained in Fluoride in Water Linked to Lower IQ in Children.

Book Review: Coleman and Hall's True Giants The Gralien Report
Micah Hanks gives the most extensive review yet of the new book by cryptozoologists Mark A. Hall and Loren Coleman, True Giants: Is Gigantopithecus Still Alive? Hanks calls the book a "fascinating read" as he sets the prospective reader on a path to understanding the question of whether or not a biped even larger than the creatures identified as Bigfoot, Yeti, Yowie, Almasty, Yeren, or one of several other localized names, still exists in the wilds of the world. Meanwhile, Coleman traces the lineage of yuletide's best recognized figure in Santa's Family Tree and follows up with Santa = Wildman, with images. And Dr. Karl Shuker has some information "about the most elusive crypto-primate of all," too, as he talks about the jolly old elf in Father Christmas, Meet Santa Claus! And, if you don't get how Saint Nicholas fits into cryptozoology, Lindsay Selby explains in Is Santa Claus a Cryptid?
