Loren Coleman cites the May 6 anniversary date as an excuse to look back at the thing that haunted that southern Illinois town many, many springtime days ago. Elsewhere, you'll find Karl Shuker Seeking Trolls On Cannock Chase, that vast protected expanse of wooded and heather-carpeted countryside near Stafford in Staffordshire, England, that for many years has been the scene of alleged encounters with a bizarre hairy entity described by startled eyewitnesses as either a bigfoot or a werewolf. And Neil Arnold digs up a Strange Monster Blown To Florida In Hurricane from 1935.

Suggest Rules of Investigation

The Pinelands National Park area of New Jersey, established in 1978, covers more than a million acres of remote forests and wetlands. According to legend, a woman in the 1700s willed a son to be born a devil only for her wish to be granted. Since then the New Jersey Devil is supposedly still lurking deep within the protected woodlands. Recently the Paranormal Museum in Asbury Park, N.J. opened an exhibit featuring artifacts pertaining to the winged beast. Strangely enough, however, archaeologist Paula Perrault claims the Pinelands area is rife with animal oddities. Referencing two headed lizards that have been found in the area, as well as other genetic malformations found within species there, she plans further investigation based on decaying petroglyphs in the area that display reptilian-like beings. Yet some have a more mundane explanation: could herds of deer fit what many witnesses describe? In Jersey Devil 2010, Loren Coleman clarifies one point in the article: "The Jersey Devil is an umbrella term in New Jersey for any cryptid, for pranks, for hoaxes, and for folkloric elements of various tales."

Bigfoot investigators Troy Hudson and Chase Robinson are convinced the legendary creature is out there somewhere in Northwest side of San Antonio, Texas. Trailing leads posted by hundreds of witnesses over the years, the two recently hunkered down in Garner State Park, near the town of Leakey, to try and validate their belief. Often confronted by nay-sayers and unbelievers, the two have a simple suggestion before you dismiss the sightings of so many honest and frightened people - go out with them and experience what they have and you might just change your mind.

Seems the animal kingdom enjoys a sixth identifiable rhinoceros species. Darren Naish summarizes the re-discovery of the Northern white rhinoceros, Ceratotherium cottoni, drawing attention to urgent conservation methods needed to study and preserve the endangered animals. Scientifically documented in the dawn of the 20th century by Percy H. G. Powell-Cotton--a classic cryptozoological “animal of discovery” from the Victorian era--the initial categorization placed the rhino as a subspecies of the African rhino, not as its own outright. Oddly, the horned beast is identifiable by its prolonged square lip and not by colorization despite it's name.

The great state of Maine is home to freaks, weirdos, unmapped roads, whispering rocks, deadening fog, ghost pirates, lonely islands, THINGS in the woods, and the International Cryptozoology Museum, of course. These topics and more are covered in Michelle Souliere’s new book, Strange Maine: True Tales from the Pine Tree State . Elsewhere, in Electric! Nick Redfern reviews Electricity of the Mind:The Anomalist 14, which he says is "all top-notch" and "well worth investing in." He found Aeolus Kephas' essay on literary shamans Whitley Strieber and Carlos Castaneda particularly noteworthy.
